The first canoe you ever PADDLED and the circumstances

I was probably 13 or 14 when our church youth group decided to do a weekend float of the Current River in Missouri. That became my first experience paddling a canoe; in a rented, square-sterned aluminum tank of a boat. Since my partner and I had the largest canoe we were tasked with carrying the...

How do I carry my new boat?

A well designed removable portage yoke shouldn't be a pain to put on. The one for my solo canoe takes less than 10 seconds to place and secure. A removable yoke has the added advantage of leaving your canoe in original condition.

What do you do with your tripping garbage?

It is against the law to burn trash (even paper) in many states, including Minnesota. This makes trash burning illegal in the BWCA as well. Besides, do we really want to go to the woods to smell someone else's trash burning? Pete

    Wisconsin Canoe Symposium?

I don't have any good ideas, but I will keep googling this topic to see if anything happens for next year. Pete

    Wisconsin Canoe Symposium?

The threads about the Adirondack, Florida, and Midwest Canoe Symposiums (Symposia?) make me want to attend one. However, New York is a long way from Kansas, and the Florida and Ohio events take place during the school year. There was a hint that the Wisconsin CS might happen last May, but I...

    Canoe Cart

I always wanted one of these. http://wicycle.com/index.php/products/boat-trailers/wike-woody-wagon-canoe-bicycle-trailer I like the idea of riding my bike to river, paddle down a few miles, then pedal back home. I don't have any personal experience with them, but they look good. And they aren't...

Well, this is the small scale site related retailers section. Most of the posts in this section could be considered advertising. Pete

    Recent Upgrade

Using "Today's Posts" only works if I can remember which posts I had already read and if I'm willing to spend the time to find the new ones. It also only shows threads that have had new posts in the previous 24 hours, so it won't work to get caught up if I am gone for a few days. I keep...

    Recent Upgrade

I miss the "New Posts" button. "Today's Posts" is not the same thing. I takes me to the beginning of each thread that has a new post, not to the new post itself. In some cases, that is 18 pages away from the new post. Pete

    Age-related risk aversion

I think that as we become more experienced, we become more aware of just how many things can go wrong. Especially things that are beyond our control. Immediately after my last wilderness canoe camping trip, I was convinced that I would never go again. A couple years of reflection, and a new...

    Lightweight Solo Tripping

Don't be too quick to dis peanut butter. When planning a lighter menu, don't look just at weight. Check the food's caloric density: calories per ounce. Peanut butter is 166 calories per ounce. There aren't many foods that are higher, unless you're into eating sticks of butter (203 cal./oz.), or...

A museum framed canoe with 1960's look

We seem to be going ‘round and ‘round. I think it’s because we’re talking about two different things. I appreciate your comment that you want a disinterested third party to be attracted to the site because of the header photograph. However, I don’t see anything wrong with it. Maybe it’s the...

A museum framed canoe with 1960's look

That's what Robin himself said. He took to photo to capture a memory of his trip through the WCPP, not to have a photo of his canoe. Yes, the canoe is a dominant element in the composition, but the power of its placement in the foreground is deemphasized by the left side being as dark as the...

A museum framed canoe with 1960's look

This is where the difference in interpretation is coming from. To Glenn, the canoe is the subject. To Robin, the Place is the subject, and the canoe is just one element of the place. If technical aspects of the photograph get that point across, it was successful from an artistic point of view...

A museum framed canoe with 1960's look

Ansel Adams liked to say that clicking the shutter was akin to writing a musical score. Developing the print (darkroom work in his case, using Photoshop today) was equivalent to performing it. Performances are always interpretations. With this photo, Robin's interpretation is different than...

    Do you wear a PFD?

I always wear it. The only time I didn't was on a trip where I became "spatially disconnected" from the pfd and my son, who was 12 at the time, worried for the rest of the trip that I was going to drown. Even though I always wear them, I don't expect much from my pfds. At best, if I somehow...

    Dri Ki Paddles

According to the website: We are currently making our paddles out of White ash, but if demand dictates, we will offer them in other types of wood in the future. We only buy premium white ash logs, which are sawed on the premises by me with our portable saw...

    Outfitting Wenonah Ultra-Light?

I am the owner of a new Wenonah Escape in ultralight construction. Among other things , this means it has tubular aluminum thwarts. On my other boats I ran shock cord through the wooden thwarts to hold little stuff like maps in place. I’m a little iffy on the idea of drilling holes in the...
