I Live to close to NYC. So if unfortunately I wasn't taken out in the first wave. I would probly try to use bike paths to get north. I don't really think of these scenario as survival. As I do running for your life. We should all just get along, and increase the peace. Just my 2 cents!
It is a nice stretch. But two longer portages for sure. The trip down long lake could be a express ride with the wind at you're tail. Also the saranacs( if the wind is from the west). I think 5 days will give you plenty of time to enjoy this trip. As a possible bonus there are restaurants/ bars...

Wow "ely portage marathon". That just screams fun! I wonder why they chose the boats they did? There are lighter boats out there. Mr. Bossen put in a real solid time at 4hr 11min can't imagine there was to much walking for that/ (6-6.5 mph avg est.). I bet his knees hurt.
