What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

I think the double I used was a 240, and I sensed pretty quickly that I'd rather have a longer one; thought I'd get less drip, and have a more comfortable stroke.

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

My present (and only) solo is a Northstar Trillium, and I'm delighted with it. Blacklite with wood trim. I didn't care for the decals so I took those off early on. Paddled it for three seasons now, and we've bonded well. Most of my paddling is day trips, on flat, or slow moving water, with some...

    Seasonal withdrawal

Paddling is about over for me here, though I have a little glimmer of hope for a nice Indian Summer day before the imminent freeze. Gets dark too early for my after work outings, even though I'm done by around 3:00. Then it's waiting for snow, and it takes a while for decent cover in the woods...

    Greetings from Vermont

Welcome neighbor! I'm up in Montgomery, just down the mountain from Jay Peak. Lifelong skier here as well, mostly all BC these days. Climbed some rock and ice also. Paddling and skiing mostly these days. Maybe see you out and about!

Anyone been to Bog River Flow this season?

Thank you folks, I appreciate the feedback. This'll be my first trip there, though I've been thru that area several times. Used to paddle around the Saranac Lakes, St. Regis area, and points east of there though.

Anyone been to Bog River Flow this season?

I've been reading what I could find on this lately, but trying to get a better idea. I understand it's now a 2.5 mile carry or wheel to access for the year. Wondering if parking is an issue, or anything other FYI's to be aware of. Thinking if had head out after the holiday Monday, there should...

2023 Leaf Change and Fall Color Where You Are

First started noticing some color here and there around a week, maybe ten days ago. Seems to have pretty much stalled since then. Last of September to first week of October has been the usual window up here; this season looks like it may be a little later. I have some vacation time to use...

    Rock Climbing

"For those in the know, how much would all of that hardware Lynn is starting out with weigh?" Good question. I don't recall an actual weight, but my best guess for what she started with would be 10-12 lbs. Noticeable for sure, and it affects your balance. She's also dragging the length of rope...

    Rock Climbing

I climbed (both rock and ice) actively for several years, mostly in the Adirondacks, but also in New Hampshire and Vermont some, and a few trips down to the 'Gunks. I miss it. Stopped because there were a few times when miscommunication with my partner could have been fatal (for them, in these...

    Wildfires in Canada!

Just looked at the smoke map, and it looks like I'm in a light to moderate zone here in VT, few miles from Quebec. The smoky haze has been very obvious here for several days; surprised this level is on the light side of the effects.

    Clamp-On Yoke Pads, $20.00

Going with a different portage style, no longer using these pads. As seen, I doubled up the foam padding, this can be trimmed down to your liking with a sharp, thin blade. $20 for the pads; shipping will be extra. I'll need a zip code to give a shipping cost estimate. Thanks for looking.

    Explain Your Screen Name

I arrived at mine by way of a typo. I was thinking "still waters", which somehow morphed.

    Straight shaft carbon paddle?

Actually, I have an old "Sea-1" wooden paddle I got at Hemlock canoes in the 80's; has a 5 or 7 degree bend (don't recall), and I realized towards the end of this past season that most of the time I was preferring it to my straight blade. I think somehow that slight bend helps compensate for an...

    Straight shaft carbon paddle?

Those do look (and sound) like some very sweet paddles.

    Straight shaft carbon paddle?

"Cliff Jacobson seems to think a fine edge is important." And I agree! It's one of the features I'm looking for in my next paddle, be it carbon or wood. There are a few paddles I've been introduced to in this thread that I hadn't been aware of... it's all helpful.

    Straight shaft carbon paddle?

That is a great price for a Black Lite, however there are a couple of nice wood paddles readily available at the same weight. Seems like all I might gain would be a thinner blade profile? Perhaps there's something in the balance of the carbons that's preferable?

    “Need” a new solo!

Thanks gents, makes good sense. I do find my removable wooden yoke more weight and fussing than I'd like for my 32 lb. Trillium, and have taken more to simply shouldering it, but my carries have been only a few hundred yards. I'll ponder the strap variation (as well as what sort of pad I'd like...
