What's changed for better or worse over your canoeing lifetime?

I agree with Cliff on the cookware. The new stoves are well built, but aluminum foil for windscreens? I still use a Sigg Tourist cookset with a Svea 123 stove. I haven’t found anything that is as stable, versatile, and windproof as a Svea 123 Stove with a Sigg Tourist cookset.

    Obsolete Stuff

I use a map and compass for my navigation tools (no batteries to go dead). As nice as the GPSs are, they are battery hogs. I would have to bring an obscene number of batteries for me to depend on GPS on a long canoe trip.

    Canoeing Plans for 2026?

We get a lot of snow in the winter. In the past 36 hours we have gotten 18-24” of snow, so I get to ride the atv with a snow plow on it to shovel the snow. I also go snowmobile riding besides canoeing. Living in Alaska is a busy lifestyle so I think it helps keeps us healthy.

    Canoeing Plans for 2026?

Well, my plans just got changed big time. I was just diagnosed with prostate cancer. I need more testing done to determine how far along the cancer is and if it has spread anywhere else. It will certainly delay all of my plans, I just don’t know how long the delay will be, a few weeks or even...

OK...How about the Wenonah Wilderness solo?

I wanted to buy a Northstar Solo, but would have to drive over 4000 miles round trip to get one. I bought a Wenonah Wilderness locally. It is only about 2 lbs heavier than the Northstar Solo. I haven’t had my Wilderness in the water yet because all of the lakes and most of the rivers are...

Bugs in Tent: How to keep them out, kill, or tolerate them?

I use Permethrin on my clothes, Picaridin on exposed skin and a thermacell in camp or in the canoe. This works for me most of the time. The few times it doesn’t work, I put on a bug jacket and headnet.

    Happens every year

I used to shoot groundhog for farmers in SE Ohio. The farmers would keep me supplied in .22-250 ammo and coolers full of ice cold Coke.

    plain hamburger

They now package spam in single serving packets. That works better for me since I mostly go canoeing by myself. My wife doesn’t like spam.

Great Lakes ice coverage - Winter 2026

I remember as a kid in the 50s & 60s going out on Lake Erie to ice fish. People used to drive their cars out on the ice.

Late Jan. 2026: Snow where you are?

We have about 15-18” on the ground and supposed to get another 5” today here in Soldotna, Alaska. I don’t use a snow shovel. I have a snow plow blade on my ATV.
