    Too cold to paint, so...

Patrick, my experience with acid stain has only been with the traditional combination of water, nitric acid and iron. I’ve used it on both plain and highly figured maple (stocks on flint and percussion long rifles). I’ve also heard that it works well on other woods. My understanding of the...

    Too cold to paint, so...

Beautiful work on the paddle and also on restoring the Stanley plane. Well done! Earlier in the thread when I saw you building with curly maple I wondered if you'd use an acid stain. There's nothing quite like it in my opinion to "pop" the curl in maple. I'm curious as to your source of stain...

Do you roll, fold or stuff your tent?

We fold and roll our tent, stakes and poles at center of roll. The unroll to pitch is quick and everything needed is right there.

Budget Stripper or Wood/Canvas Builds: How to Save Costs

Disclaimer: I've built one stripper and took 3 and a half years to complete it. That being said, building a canoe was probably the most joyful, educational, pleasurable and satisfying project I've ever done. I had wanted to build a stripper for many years, but never had space to devote to it...

    A Raven for Christmas

Beautiful canoe! I bet you smile every time you look at it. I know I would. I like how you're willing to experiment and explore new ideas. Nicely done!

    Winter footwear preferences?

All of my cold weather activities are active and I prefer uninsulated boots. Activities include hunting, trapping, snow shoeing, outside work, walking the dog, etc. For years my go to were various models of LaCrosse rubber pacs. About 10 years ago they stopped working well due to arthritis in...

    A Raven for Christmas

Cutting in scuppers reduced gunnel weight by a pound and a half on my build. Your canoe is looking great! Thanks for taking time to post your progress.

First Build: 17'-6" J. Winters "Yukon"

My apologies for being so slow getting back to this thread with paddling impressions and photos. We enjoyed quite a bit of time in our new boat with day trips on the Lamoille River and Green River Reservoir in VT, a 6 day trip to Allagash Lake via Johnson Pond in ME and a 5 day up and back trip...

I like the keel accent strip! I would finish stripping the hull and then fit and install the outer stems.

Oswegatchie River to above High Falls and Back in the Fall

Really nice trip report and video. Thank you! We were the party camped at site 23, October 26-28. You passed us at Griffin Rapids on the 26th, paddling upstream as we enjoyed a snack in the lean to. I thought the high water made the beaver dams easier to deal with, both upstream and down. But we...

Paddlers and Snow Walkers Gathering, Thetford VT, October 13-15, 2023

We stayed with a friend who lives nearby. Most folks traveled to the event and either stayed in camp cabins or tented on site.

Paddlers and Snow Walkers Gathering, Thetford VT, October 13-15, 2023

Karen and I had a terrific weekend at the Paddlers and SnowWalkers gathering. It was nice to meet fellow CTN members. Somehow we missed catamount hardware and low angle al. Next time! The Ohana Family Camp was a superb venue for the gathering. The schedule “pace” was just right with plenty of...

We reinstalled thwarts and seats first thing this morning before wrestling the canoe out of the “boat shop”. I borrowed a digital scale to try and get an accurate weight. 59.5 pounds. I really haven’t focused on weight at all in this build, but this was a pleasant surprise. Our 1979 Mad River...

First Build: 17'-6" J. Winters "Yukon"

Thinning Epifanes varnish 15% with their thinner was a big difference maker. I didn’t have any trouble tipping with the foam brush or advancing the wet edge without lap marks. The first photo shows something worth noting. S glass doesn’t wet out translucently like E glass does. I used S glass...

Yes. I think the initial application of oil is the most important for water proofing. I want the wood to absorb all that it can first coat. End grain soaks up a lot and I find it easiest to soak for a couple hours when possible. Rick

I was curious how much the seats, thwarts etc weighed so I took time to weigh them when I disassembled for final finishing. 2 lbs 7 oz stern seat, drops, hardware 3 lbs 10 oz bow seat, drops, slide rails (1 lbs 3 oz), hardware 1 lbs 6 oz bow thwart, hardware 1 lbs 10 oz carry thwart, hardware...

This is a new event to us, but Karen and I are looking forward to attending. There is a nice new website where detailed information is available. The program looks great and the presenters are outstanding. The website is https://www.paddlerssnowwalkersvt.org/

Gunnels are pretty much a working surface for us. I usually slide the canoe up onto the truck rack and it’s not unusual to use the out-wale as a paddle fulcrum. With that kind of treatment I thought oil might be an easier finish to maintain than varnish. I was hoping to use Watco Teak but wasn’t...
