Finland is Dream Destination for Canoe Tripping

I grew up in Grand Rapids and traveled the Big Fork River a lot and still have a deer shack near Little Fork. Moved to Alaska in 69. I hang around Yukon Territory mush of the summer to escape Alaska's excessive tourism. My avatar shows why.

Finland is Dream Destination for Canoe Tripping

Having grown up in Northern Minnesota, I had a lot of Finnish friends and a girl friend from the old country. It was often stated that they roll their aRse. I also knew the fellow that saw a Rapala lure in MN and went to Finland where he struck a deal with Mr Rapala and started a very successful...

Video: Tandem Canoe Trip on Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson

The video clearly shows the route around the standing waves, but I've seen groups of European tourist paddlers head straight into the white horses. Depending on water level, the waves can be 4' by my estimate.

Video: Tandem Canoe Trip on Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson

That's a very interesting trip with loads of historical gold rush era sites. Fort Selkirk is worth an overnight or two. There's a well for better drinking water there also. Five Finger Rapids is a piece of cake if you pay attention. The Teslin River is another option as it enters the Yukon at...

How is your winter so far?

The previous two winters were catastrophic for our wildlife and for the citizenry but this year is very mild with only a foot of snow....BUT, last week my thermometers bottomed out and I had to bring the brass monkey in off the lawn. We had a couple days of -60F.

    Unfulfilled Tripping Dreams?

I'll soon be 82 but am seriously thinking of doing the Pelly this summer. I've got other old phardt friends that think we should give it a try.

    Moose — Stories, Photos, Videos

Moose can be unpredictable but that one may have brain worm. We don't see that parasite here in Alaska....yet. I've been charged by cows with calves and without calves. Fortunately, I've been able to discourage them without having to shoot. My neighbor bought a very shiny new pickup and had it...

    Aurora Borealis

My neighbor friend is a great photographer and took this photo last year on the Delta Clearwater River. The Clearwater River starts in a huge spring and stays open at 39F all year unless temperatures get to -40F and below.

Books that made a profound impact

The bus has been hauled out of the bush and will be on display in Fairbanks. Several readers hiked to the bus and created excessive rescue situations.

Invasive fish (northern pike) threatens Maine lakes. Huh?

Memaquay and Gamma have summed up my thoughts beyond my capability. If you can find those slimy buggers spawning in a creek, a 22LR does wonders on em. Pike lovers moved pike to the south side of the Alaska range into our best salmon areas including a few lakes of the Kenai River system. AND NO...

    Northern lights

It's been a phenomenal year here for the aurora borealis.......my neighbor is a very good photographer and caught this view over the Delta Clearwater River. The Delta Clearwater is mostly ice free all winter as it emanates from a very large spring and flows all year at 39F.
