    Ignorance is Bliss

Fear of falling in getting wet is very hard to get our subconscious to understand. "it's okay" in the right conditions there's nothing to be afraid of. We used to take my prospector in about 4 feet of water on a lake and purposely sink, roll, climb in, etc

    Ignorance is Bliss

Without knowing you're paddling style, skill level, or how long you've actually been paddling, it's pretty hard to help. giving you all kinds of "how I do, this and how I do that" probably aren't going to help much. Carving a turn, low and hi brace, reaching c stroke etc.. (everybody...

    Another first timer here!

thank you for kind words, it's been about 3 years now Sighs :(. And thank you for the compliments on my (our) work it keeps me off the street lol It's doubtful the big box store people will even know what you mean when you say Western red cedar, just ask them to point you to the cedar decking...

    Another first timer here!

Welcome aboard I've been 35 years plus woodworking, I came very close to having a retirement small craft and furniture restoration business but my son left us at the age of 35. my first question would be what type of river is the river you're living on? Strip canoes are wonderful, but they...

    First time here...so be gentle

You're welcome, white cedar is the absolute best choice, has a slight peppermint smell, it's nothing at all like Western red thats dark, splinters & splits It's hard to come by in long lengths so you may find yourself cutting lots and lots of strips from shortboards but as I mentioned you...

    The Purge (river style)

I read over a couple times I didn't pick up the humor! sorry! I'm glad I'm wrong! But I know the feelings well I used to go backpacking alone in the woods.

    The Purge (river style)

Years ago I was on the Delaware River with my WCHA group, we camped at bushkill area campsites. A group of young people were camped nearby, drinking carousing, doing the usual objective stuff that young people do. I think it was the next day, I was out doing some freestyle moves on the...

    Alternatives to Cedar?

You don't want to use cedar, Use the wood tm you want! Some people have used marine foam core, Because the strips are thin and small they dry fast and they don't have as much movement, but if you don't incapsulate it, you may have problems no matter what the wood is. (Get a moisture...

    Resin choice

Not my boat not my decision, whatever it gets is going to add weight to what already probably is a rather heavy boat.

    Good Evening All

We used 3/4" pine square strips, and a 2x6 in the keel line so the ribs can be clamped down with a 2x4 and long bolts on top, (which is really the bottom) Very rigid construction. This very long clamp also is shaped with the rocker built into the form. I lost a lot of photographs to Photobucket

    Good Evening All

They actually go together quite quick! it's the form that can take years to build and or develop! I gave my form away based on the fact we weren't going to build any more canoes

    Resin choice

If you find epoxy coating the outside fills in the cracks you may want to paint it with a two-part polyurethane paint $$$ rather than 1 stage paint $ If the boat seems weak and the inside hasn't been painted you could put cloth on the inside because that would add more strength then adding it...

They had a 20 foot camper trailer, they could have put it on the roof

No they cut it, but a wood canvas canoe can be put back together with new planking, even when cut in half like that, because the planking, ribs, & rails are the structure, ( why keel-less canoes survive river use).

    First time here...so be gentle

Cedar is almost always the best choice. The first two strippers I (with others) built, we were able to obtain full length strips after that, I realized it just isn't worth the effort and the next 5 canoes we just used cedar deck boards, cut them up ignoring the knots, then we'd break the...

What Paddles do you guys use!

I'd like to toss this question into the mix... What length paddle do you use? Over the years I found shorter is better for me I'm 5' 6" - 54" seems work best for me (I'll check)

    Ignorance is Bliss

It takes a lot of paddling to find your style and comfort zone in a canoe I kneel like most, use a pad not knee pads. Most canoe seats are too high! I recently refurbed my 15ft solo to tandem I forgot to adjust the seat height and tilt. Went on a one-day river trip (first time in almost 10...

    Ignorance is Bliss

Congrats on the canoe! Solo paddling seems frustrating at first, I don't know when it became my only choice for paddling, except to say, after many hours and miles it became 2nd nature. Canoeing well really is more about the paddler than the canoe, meaning an experienced canoeist can...
