    Boundary waters advise wanted

For quite some time I've been thinking about doing a multi-week solo up in the BWCA next summer after I get out of the navy. I figure it'll give me some time to clear my head and learn something about myself. This thread is doing me a load of good, thanks guys.

    Quick Update from Japan

Hey folks! My ship is back out to sea after a short two-month break, which means that you're about to hear from me again! So in the past couple months since I've logged in to our wonderful online fellowship, my ship has pulled into our new home in Sasebo, Japan, and I've had the opportunity to...

    What are you reading?

Here's the real champ! As much as I hate to admit it, I might actually have to buy an e-book. I hate to do it, I really need a physical copy of almost anything be it music, books, or anything else, but an electronic copy is better than no copy.

This guy's got the right idea. If only we knew where to find a group of retirement-age outdoor enthusiasts!!

    Update update

Let me tell ya, Robin, if lurkers weren't supported, I'd have never found this spot, and I'd never have come into this great community of like-minded individuals. With that being said, if there's some place that I can kick in a donation, I'll give what I can.

    What are you reading?

Yeah, I've been looking all over for them, I did find a copy of Volume I, but it was going for about $150, which is more than a Sailor's salary can afford. I have been reading some journals of his posted in Arctic magazine in the 80s or so, To Great Slave and Great Bear, which have a lot of...

    Next years trips?

I'm looking forward to whatever paddling experiences Japan has to offer me. I haven't done a lot of research quite yet, but you can be sure that as soon as I get back from my Spring Patrol early this summer, I'll get the boys together and hit the water.

    Florida Spots?

Well heck, Ken, I wish I had seen this before we'd left. We were in town almost three weeks, we definitely could have figured something out. Lord knows I'd definitely love to meet some of the brothers and sisters of the paddle from this site.

    What are you reading?

Alan, that really blows my mind and gets me all the more interested in that incredible chunk of the world! Incredibly ironic that you posted here so recently and about that trip of all things because I finally got around to reading Downes's Sleeping Island. For those who don't know, Sleeping...

    Florida Spots?

Hey folks! My ship pulled into Mayport, Florida, up near Jacksonville. I managed to snag a few days of leave time this weekend, and I'll be road tripping around the state. I've thought about taking an overnight canoe trip (or a short day trip) in the state, anyone have some suggestions? And are...

    Cheap alternative to Blue Barrels

Jim, my dude! I've been curious about the paint bucket/seabag combo forever, because we obviously have both in abundance on a navy ship. I'm glad I didn't have to ask!

All-Night Paddle in the Great Dismal Swamp

Any other trip I'd agree, but there just wasn't any time for beer! And I'm the type who can always make time for beer!

All-Night Paddle in the Great Dismal Swamp

Yep, those are the scary b*st*rds. Got my skin crawling as soon as I googled it. Sends a shiver down my spine.

    Adirondack Gathering October 6,7,8 & 9th- 2017

Sounds great guys, I'm looking forward to reading the thread with the story. I'd kill to make it out, but I'm stuck on the big war canoe until further notice.

Wollaston Lake to Goose Lake (Nunavut Border) and back

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but I'd just like to say that this post is what made me fall in love with this site. My ship was underway for a month in July, and it was during that time that I discovered this post and ate it up like candy. Truly changes perspective on a lot of stuff...

    Longtime Lurker Finally Joining In

Nice to see someone from Ohio and some navy family! Is/was your son a F/A-18 pilot or something else? I'm well familiar with Navy aviation, my ship is a big-deck that handles everything from small attack choppers to Ospreys to Harriers and F-35Bs. Good stuff to be around, really gets that red...

All-Night Paddle in the Great Dismal Swamp

I would certainly like to take another trip there, maybe in cooler weather because I hate spiders and humidity. Next time I'm stateside I'll be going back to Norfolk area to get rid of a car that I had to leave behind, I might stop for a night and repeat the trip.

All-Night Paddle in the Great Dismal Swamp

Nope, New Moon that night, so the only light I had to work with was from my headlamp. There were a few times, paddling with the light off, that I would turn my headlamp on to find that I was seconds away from crashing into a fallen tree. For the most part though, being a straight, wide, and...
