Mad River canoes no longer being produced

I don't understand, the used canoe market is still bonkers. Weren't Swift and Esquif doing some manufacturing for them? Is that on hold as well?

What was the worst canoe you ever owned or paddled?

+1 for the aluminum-framed Coleman, with a plastic Rogue River 14 (Sams Club canoe) taking second place.

    Spirit II vs. Prospector 17

I suggest taking the brand-new-canoe money and buying two used ones with money left over for skid plates and outfitting. Have you considered a Mad River Explorer? I picked up a used royalex model in very good shape this spring for $800. I've only managed to get it wet a couple times so I...

Northern Wisconsin river paddle trip ?

Stop by Rutabaga on your way north, they should have a copy of Mike Svob's "Paddling Northern Wisconsin". If they don't I can loan ya a couple pages out of mine. Flambeau, Manitowish, Wisconsin, Tomahawk all have good camping on them for a 3 day trip. I live in Price County and we aren't...

    Defacing money vs Fender Washer

YOLO! Great idea, I will probably copy it myself, just bought some stainless hardware the other day and the price was ridiculous. Maybe sand the edges and visible face so you can't tell that it's a quarter any more, if you're skeered.

Swift Keewaydin 18.6 vs. Wenonah Minnesota II

Chiming in because I think the Souris River Quetico 18.5 should be in this conversation. Souris River does all their epoxy work by hand and claims they that end up with a more durable hull. Their weights and prices are competitive with Swift and Wenonah. Hard to find, though, they only list...

    Light-weight Portable Chargers

After 4 years the RavPower brand powerbank I mentioned in a couple of the threads that Glenn linked is still going strong. One of the 3 USB ports quit working but the other two are just fine. I thought mine was somewhere around 24000mAh/15 ounces but I see one that looks identical on their...

First solo canoe and solo safety

I've always watched craigslist but in the last few years facebook marketplace has become quite popular in the states. I was recently introduced to a facebook group called North American Canoe Trader that has a surprising amount of listings posted. Originally from the sit and switch camp here...

Freighter: 6ft waves safe and dry, cruise speed 30 mph in flats, minimum load cap 1500 lb

Velkommen! Seems to me if you're looking for more efficiency and speed you would need to go quite a bit longer, perhaps 24'. This could be done by adding stations or extending the length between them without adding to the beam if you can only find plans for a 20'er.

Help me pick my first real cell phone

I've ran Samsung Galaxy phones for years. Nowadays the company buys me the flagship S series every couple of years but if it didn't I would have an A series like Alan which do pretty much everything that the flagship models from a couple of years ago do. You can save even more money with a...

    Tackle kit/fishing equipment

This is a major problem for me! I like shiny things and own way too much fishing tackle. I also prefer to fish with spoons so it gets heavy in a hurry. I use waterproof 3600 series boxes to organize all of my tackle, which are 11"x7.25"x1.75" and, incredibly, used to bring 2 of them on...

    Canoe hauling

I've put 1000s of miles on my 03 subaru with a canoe on the factory front rack and a receiver hitch rack for the rear. I even scribed a 4" log to fit snug over the factory rack to make it wide enough to handle two canoes side by side. On this vehicle the racks are so far apart that I forego...

Poll: What type of vehicle is your usual canoe vehicle currently?

This 2003 Subaru Baja is the "other". Thinking the next one will be a Tacoma with a cap.

    Abandoned Canoes?

A few years back we had just received an ungodly amount of rain in east central MN and an uncle and I decided to paddle a small creek that isn't normally navigable. The first turn got us, which was to be expected, but we managed to recover the canoe unharmed a couple hundred yards later in an...

    BWCA Round Lake loop

Very aggressive route for your first canoe trip! Sounds like you handled it better than most, especially without a tent. I'm not sure about that portage 'yoke' though. Interested to see where you went from here, you have one of the most remote areas of the BWCA between you and your truck...

    She's Arrived

Looks great! Also looks like Rutabaga'a parking lot? Can't have crooked factory skid plates if there's no factory skid plates! Did you order it in a solo setup or regular/tandem? Can't quite see the seats in the pics Zac

    Blew out a flip flop

What brand were your broken ones? I'll spend $75 on a pair of flip flops if they last a decade, I blow out a pair or two of cheap ones every year

    Alternatives for this site's future

This summer of tribulation has affirmed to me that the community here is full of great people. Every time I've logged on to check for updates (my ability to log on was never interupted, windows 10, chrome) I've had a horrible feeling that I would be reading about the end of the site. Today all...
