OT but fun - Sales and Scam calls

I seem to be especially popular with these people, they phone me constantly! A few years ago a young lady (sounded young, anyway) called. I interrupted her spiel with: "I'm sorry, I'm at work. My employer charges $85 per hour for my services, 1/2 hour minimum. Could I have your credit card...

    alcohol stove fuel (Trangia)

Tried the alcohol burning part of my Ti-Tri last fall, wasn't impressed. It worked fine in warm temps, but on a cold morning (just slightly below freezing) it would barely burn. This year I'll bring a pint or two of ever-clear. Supposed to be 98% pure, so should burn more easily, and if it's...

    Stoves

No, purchased the unit from "Trail Designs" out of the States. Not cheap, but it's all titanium...super light! There's a way to store the whole thing in the 900ml pot it came with, but that's almost on par with putting toothpaste back in the tube so I use a peanut butter jar, which holds a...

Dehydrated recipes. Anyone got some good ones?

One thing I picked up from McAllister's stuff is to mix bread crumbs into your ground beef prior to browning when planning to dehydrate it. About one cup per pound. Makes it way easier to re-hydrate properly. That tip alone was worth the price of the book.

Dehydrated recipes. Anyone got some good ones?

I picked this up a few years ago. No one set of recipes is perfect but "Recipes for Adventure" by Glen McAllister with the aforementioned books by Linda Yaffe have stood me well. Also take a look at this: http://www.theyummylife.com/Backpacking_Food Some are a little complex to put...

    Too much gear?

Yes...but. Then there's the first aid kit. My philosophy is and always has been: completely disregard the budget of price space & weight, that you can buy the very best money can buy, and hope like heck you wasted every red cent and drop of sweat carrying it for nothing. Admittedly, on my...

    Kitchen Furniture

I'm a newbie & been lurking all night, making little comments here & there. Already posted something like this elsewhere, but I'm completely sold on my "Alite Monarch Chair" Under a pound, slightly larger than a 1 ltr nagalene bottle, and best of all amazingly comfortable! No affiliation...

    Can a Mercedes-Benz E350 be a canoe car?

I've tried a few sporks. Most useless tool I ever got suckered into buying. A spoon, real spoon, is an absolute necessity, sometimes a fork is nice, especially for the very rare occasion I catch a fish, but a spork...can't do anything right. Sorry, some things just have to be spoken aloud.

    Can a Mercedes-Benz E350 be a canoe car?

No Title This works, & there are darn few vehicles less suitable for moving anything larger than a set of golf clubs. I built the trailer such that the canoe sits upright. That way all the gear stays in the boat, leaving the trunk for anything that should be kept out of sight until the last...

Rocker Chair - REI. Good deal alert

A friend talked me into trying an "Alite Monarch Chair" last year & I *love it*! Body's starting to let me down about the same time I decide to get back into backpacking, stupid timing, but hey...! Stuffing a chair into my pack when I'm struggling to reduce partial ounces? Sounds like more than...

    Stoves

I can't recall how long the Ti-Tri took to boil water but I would definitely remember if I'd been unhappy. It most certainly wasn't 50 minutes, or 20. 5 sounds about right, but I never really timed it. For sure the Whisperlight is faster, but it doesn't smell as good, warm my hands the same...

    Stoves

I've been a long time advocate for my Whisperlight International. Fantastic little stove that's worked at -30, high 90s (F), sea level & on top of a few tall mountains. In 20+ years it gave me trouble once, on the bank of the Yukon River. 20 minutes of fiddling & it was back to work. That...
