La Vérendrye: Canada’s Largest Canoe Camping Reserve

LV is only a 2.5 hour drive from home. Been going there off and on since the early 60's. Some great souvenirs of the place. Have not been there since the SEPAQ have taken over. Feedback regarding the philosophy of the present administration does not suit my style of solo canoeing. At my age (86)...

Leaving for the still "frozen" North, Riviere Megiscane

Let's hope your Leafs win the final game. As a Québécois, I never thought I'd ever cheer for the Blue and White. Too bad about the high water covering the beaches because there sure are a lot of them along that route. Have a good recovery and plan your next trip.

Leaving for the still "frozen" North, Riviere Megiscane

Have done the Megiscane twice, once solo in July and with a friend in August (circa 1980's) Earlier than that, and it's either ice in May or hordes of bugs in June. In summer, the Megiscane is a technical river at places with lower water and huge boulders as you get downstream. Kudos to Recped...

    A Tale of Two Trippers

Interesting post. We owned 2 Trippers over a 30 year period, and they were true workhorses on long wilderness adventures. A young man's canoe, as they were as heavy as they were indestructible. The only mod we made was painting the interior floor and adding sand over the wet paint as an...

Solo Composite Canoe that can do it all 😉

If you can fish out of an empty Argosy, then you can fish out of almost any canoe. I've had 2 Argos and found them stable when loaded, but not so unloaded. I've seen Robin fish out of one empty often, and he did not seem uncomfortable. I sold both of mine as age now demands a lighter solo boat...

    Northern WI wolf attack

Wondering if the ducks hunters had a retriever with them. I had a similar experience in La Vérendrye in August of 2009. The wolves were not interested in me, it's my dog they were after. Apparently they don't accept dogs trespassing on their territory. I succeeded in repelling them with a bear...

    “alcide quessy fils” canoe

It seems that both father and son raced canoes at one time. Stopped producing canoes circa 2017 when a fire took the shop down to the ground. Stopped making paddles as of August the 8th. of this year. A couple of models on this page...

    La Vérendrye: Extended season.

It has finally happened. Canoe camping without the motorized fishermen. Yep, LV has extended the canoe season this year by 3 weeks. https://www.sepaq.com/rf/lvy/nouvelles/nouvelle.dot?id=375fdad6-082b-4c6a-9001-a460602a5c5f&language_id=1 G.

    Precipitous Moose Decline in Minnesota

memaquay said: Same here in Québec province. When I first started canoeing in La Vérendrye in the early 70's. We would see moose every day, even in the most southern part. Now from the Le Domaine south it's almost exclusively deer. Some say it has to do with all the clear cut logging over the...

    Which Subaru?

I've had both Foresters and Outbacks since they became available in Canada. I prefer the Outback because of the lower profile which, with the same engine, gives better gas mileage, comes with built-in roof racks and is easier to put a canoe on. G.
