East Branch Fox River - Michigan's Upper Peninsula

A few years ago I paddled the Manistique River from Germfask to Lake Michigan. I looked at possibilities of starting even farther north in the west or east branch of the Fox River. I was told by Nortland Outfitters the east branch is impassable by canoe to the Manistique R. I believe by fall...

McCormick Wilderness, Michigan; October 19th thru October 23rd, 2017

Viking, I haven't paddled that river, but it's on my short list and would love to do so from the Peshekee to Lake Michigan. I'm headed to Alaska in a week and will be there till October, but hopefully next year I'll cross that one off. On a side note. I'll finish this trip report in the next...

Canoeing the Mississippi, starting in Mid-Late October?

Does anyone have thoughts on canoeing the entire Mississippi beginning in Mid-Late October? I'm currently working at a remote fishing lodge in Alaska as a guide, and we get back home in early October. My Buddy and I would like to begin our journey mid to late October? Right now we can't see any...

2 1/2 months winter camping in the BWCA

I wonder what shape his vehicle was in when he got out, or if he somehow arranged a ride out from the put-in?

    Early season!?

I don't know how it's looking everywhere else, but here in the UP the temps have mostly been a lot above normal with temps in the 20's and 30's. Ice hasn't been nearly as thick as it normally is this time of year. Since I'm taking a job in Alaska this summer i might get to get more canoeing in...

Trips planned for 2017 What is everyone planning

The portages are supposed to be brutal. The way the glaciers left that island geography is messed up, it's ridges running southwest to northeast throughout the island, and the up and downs when you go northwest/southeast are steeep (i believe the south sides are supposed to be steeper?). I'm...

Trips planned for 2017 What is everyone planning

I'd really like to do the inland route of Isle Royale National Park this year. Will Probably do BWCA again at some point, and would like to do a couple rivers in the UP that I have yet to do (Paint, Escanaba, Michigamme, Whitefish, etc).

    Map Storage/Organization

You guys all had great input and ideas. I'm currently in the process of making them all lay flat again, and then going from there. I found a map drawer cabinet, but it was $600, might try making one too. We'll see. Thanks again everyone!

Is my problem technique or boat trim or?

I mean in theory isn't paddling a canoe not properly trimmed just poor technique? (Sometimes I hate what I say too).

    2016 Northstar Polaris

I'm also interested in this also as a canoe outfitter actually recommended a polaris to me for solo use before. I'm also a bigger guy at 6ft 2in, 230 lbs.

I went to BMO once. Bought a canoe, paddles, etc. Told myself I'd never go back. They're too good at what they do haha.

    Map Storage/Organization

My Dad recently gave me about 50+ topographic maps, many with canoe routes on them. Right now most are rolled, with some being folded. What way do you store your maps? Do you have anyway you organize your maps? I'm looking for ideas now that it's winter. Also, does anyone have a map coating...

Is my problem technique or boat trim or?

I thought for the longest time my canoe was just bad in the wind (and in reality it is), but after being forced to paddle in the wind I finally just learned how to do it right. It's never easy, but it doesn't take me for a ride anymore. It's probably technique more than Trim. it sounds like you...
