    Plus size canoeing?

FYI for those that think the lightweight alumicraft isn't really that light. It's a 17' tandom weighing 53 lbs which is lighter than many canoes. It needs to be treated like a composite because it was built with thinner aluminum and less beafy thwarts. I think the reason they quit making it...

    Plus size canoeing?

I've had that model for 25+ years, needs to be treated like a lightweight not an aluminum tank, I think that is why they quit making it. Works great for plus size folks. Mine has handled a 250 and 300+ with gear together. The seats are also wider than most.

Cleaning and restoring Michicraft aluminum canoe

Mallet should work fine and I've pressure washed my aluminum canoe many times, after 30 years it doesn't look great but still works.

    Sanborn Paddle Quality

I'll preface my comments by saying that my son and my nephew started the Sanborn paddle company but about 5 years ago my sons sideline of also making baseball bats exploded so he sold his share of Sanborn to their 1st employee. I used to be in the shop a lot but only rarely now and I don't know...

Do you bring an ice chest or cooler?

I covered one of my bear vaults in foam, only added a couple of pounds and I put some frozen bacon and such in the bottom - keeps for a few days depending on the temp.

Paddling places that weren't what you expected

Paddled 100 miles of the Missouri river through the Missouri break in Montana, it was beautiful and a great trip but there was a lot of hype about following the route of Lewis and Clarke but the river without dams and flood control (which is great) is probably nothing like when Lewis and Clarke...

Tips To Deal With The Great Tick Invasion

I've always wondered why my dog can chew up a pill and be protected from ticks but there isn't one for us larger mammals.

One thing I will never do again is . . .

Go with a group that includes folks I know nothing about. Leave my pup at home - you want to go with me then you go with my pup.

    BWCA Permits

They do that in the BWCA but you get a refund of everything except $6, not much of a deterrent. On the brighter side I did secure my permit for a May Rainbow and Lake trout trip.

    BWCA Permits

2024 Season BWCA permits go online at 9am Central time this morning, they are all first come, first serve. Unfortunately the trend the last few years is for folks to grab the majority of the permits right away without firm plans. This leads to a lot of cancellations many of which are done too...

Odd, funny, scary or beautiful things seen on a portage

It was the end of May, I'm pretty sure it was the aluminum tank I was carrying that helped!

Odd, funny, scary or beautiful things seen on a portage

On a BWCA portage one year with my canoe on my shoulders I came face to face with a mother moose and her calf. We both stopped and looked at each other, I moved to one side and she moved to the other side and walked past me. I'm guessing having the canoe up helped me look larger than I...

Solo or small tandem (to fit the dog)

I've found that I like a smaller size tandem to use with my 70# pup, has more room for the pup and my gear and seems easier to balance out everything than a solo was. Currently my go to is a 14.5' Merrimack Traveler that was/is a hybrid test model that came in at 39#.

    Unfulfilled Tripping Dreams?

I've never been an expedition type of tripper, my longest trip was 10 nights out. As a Minnesota boy I've become a BWCA fanatic to the tune of 4 or 5 trips a year most years. I've paddled, hiked, skied or snowshoed during every calendar month of the year. I enjoy various types of trips (solo...

    Litter, garbage and trash

I was pleasantly surprised on my 3 trips to the BWCA this summer and found almost no trash on portages or at campsites, a complete reversal to what it was during the pandemic.
