Gross stupidity with an alcohol stove

Sturgeon, the trick with a firesteel is to hold the striker stationary and draw the steel back towards you. That is how THIS klutz does it. Jim

Fire in a Can No 5 (and 6)

Cool idea - thanks for posting the pics Mike. Although tempted, I feel I should shy away from fire-related projects after my latest alky stove fiasco ;-) Jim

    Recommendations for fixed blade knife

No Title Out of curiosity I did a search for Kydex sheaths for the Benchmade. One of the hits was for a sheath made by Bay Wind Kydex and sold on Bonanza. Apparently I got the last one at $56. Arrived today, fits perfectly, great retention and no chance of accidentally cutting the leather...

    Down sleeping bag? (specific criteria)

I do not own one, but have friends with Western Mountaineering bags. I am highly impressed with the quality. Also, impressed with the price! But they are domestically made if that matters. This one may fit your specs...

Gross stupidity with an alcohol stove

No Title Hmmmmmm. I wonder if I could light my little Peterson "nose warmer" with a firesteel? Maybe while lighting a stove? Jim

Tell me about your favorite paddle

I will agree with philtrum on the Bell/Mitchell bent. Super quiet on entry and exit, stable in the water, and cool to look at. And like Turtle I always modify the grips anywhere from a little to a lot. BTW, I sit exclusively. Jim

Gross stupidity with an alcohol stove

I should add that my favored method for starting the White Box and my two Minibull Designs stoves is to use a firesteel and striker. Time to lose all of the BICs.

Gross stupidity with an alcohol stove

ppine : True regarding alky stoves on boats. But I had NO trouble seeing the plume(s) of flame emanating from my stove! Added to the excitement. Jim

    Hanging Around - Hammock Questions

Red: The JRB Bear Mountain hammock you mention is a fine hammock. It is of the "bridge" type and favors side-sleeping. Jacks R Better is a fine company to deal with. Jim

Gross stupidity with an alcohol stove

I was fiddling with my collection of alcohol stoves this afternoon. I decided to run time-to-boil tests, and when I came to my last stove, a White Box. I was low on fuel. I was using a BIC lighter and was having trouble getting the alcohol in the stove to light, so in a moment of gross...

    Hanging Around - Hammock Questions

Turtle is correct about needing under insulation in 50 deg temps. Amazing how cold one can get at that temp. Commonly referred to as "CBS" (Cold Butt Syndrome) Jim

    Hanging Around - Hammock Questions

My two cents I bought a Hennessey probably 15 or more years ago (back when they were yellow & blue). First night I froze due to no under insulation. But I realized that it was comfortable to my back. Gave that one to a niece who was in the Peace Corps in central America and bought myself an...

    Knife project

Regarding "mushrooming" of handle bolts: Have you considered Corby bolts Dave? http://usaknifemaker.com/corby-bolt-....html?___SID=U From the Gough website http://goughcustom.com/blog/2014-01-15-testing-handle-attachment/testing-handle-attachment.html I have never made a knife, and I defer...

    Hello from McCandless PA

A campfire would be good. Probably several months until the snow is melted and conditions are favorable. My thoughts go back to the fall of 2013 when a small group of us gathered under an elaborate tarp city to brave the wind and rain at Raystown and salute out dear departed friend NT.

    Hello from McCandless PA

I sort of forgot to introduce myself when I signed up last year. Just started posting. At least Robin recognized me from CCR. Current fleet consists of a Bell Magic in need of new rails, a MR Freedom Solo, and QCC 500x touring kayak. All of which are under used. Maybe 2015 will be better...

    Household stuff and tripping

Wash & Dry individually wrapped towelettes. I always carry a small roll of TP with me hiking, boating, or biking. A couple of these go in the Ziplock with the paper. Personal hygiene is important - especially when biking. Jim

Hubba Hubba 1st vs 2nd generation

Good evaluation of the HubbaHubba Mike. I have been generally pleased with my 1st gen HH, enough so that I bought a Hubba for bikepacking, also 1st gen. Your observation about the higher walls caught my attention, as I was on a multi-day ride on the GAP trail this past summer during...

    Recommendations for fixed blade knife

No Title Found the Benchmade Glenn! Surprisingly, it was in the last place I looked......... As the pics show, the beeswax darkened and smoothed the split grain leather. Time will tell if the treatment lasts. I understand that beeswax was used in midevil times to harden leather armor. Hope...

    Hardware stores

I have a good hardware store nearby, but undoubtedly not as old as your's. But still my go-to for buying a part and actually getting help! BTW, I highly recommend the Gransfors-Bruks sharpening stone. If you have a boutique woodworkers shop(Woodcrafters) in the area they ought to have it...
