    Cane or webbing?

Robin, How did you attach the webbing to the underside (original top-side) of the frames: staples, short brads, short screws, other? Did you have any trouble getting into the ash? (It looks like the frames are ash. I am wondering how hard it was to staple, nail, or whatever into the ash that...

    16' Mad River Freedom

Very nicely done! Your purchase price of "too good to pass up" plus your effort turned that hull into what looks to be a very good river canoe. It will be interesting to see how much you get for it upon resale, especially since it seems many sellers are aware that royalex is no longer being...

    16' Mad River Freedom

I just noticed a 16" MRC Freedom with vinyl rails and flotation on ebay, in Rochester NY. They are asking $950. Robin, if you follow that sale, and see if it actually sells, that should give you some idea of what yours may be worth not too far from you. I paid $968 w-o tax for my wood railed...

    16' Mad River Freedom

No Title Good luck with the routing. I've done some and have not been too successful without practice, a guide, and much patience. Philtum above provides some dimensions that I don't see. He mentions "the in- and outwales were 3/4" wide and about 7/8" high" on an Eclipse and an Indy. I don't...

    16' Mad River Freedom

No Title Yes, the 7/8" was measured from hull horizontally outward, both inwale and outwale. The 3/4" is measured vertically top to bottom (with canoe as normally floating in water) I have the stock decks from MRC, as indicated in the pix below. I believe MRC used butternut for the decks, they...

    16' Mad River Freedom

No Title 1st pic below is one slot in the inwale of my Freedom. Original gunnels on this canoe are 7/8" wide x 3/4" thick ash, with all outside edges rounded. Screws are threaded from inwale, through hull, to outwale (not through outer surface of outwale of course), on approx 6 1/2" centers...

    16' Mad River Freedom

Robin, If the before pix are what "good" looks like, I'd hate to see "fair". But you're right, the bare hull doesn't look too bad. I've had mine looking like that once, not for new gunnels, but for all my wood railed canoes, I remove them, add slots to the inwales where desired for flotation...

    Limited Access

For whatever this is worth: I visit this site daily to see what threads have been updated. I often browse the new posts, especially if I have kept up-to-date with the topics or if they are of interest to me. I doubt it is more than 1-2/minute. I don't always log in and do not stay logged in...

    Restored Mad River Courier

Kris, I have several Mad River Canoe catalogs from the 1990s. The Courier is shown in the 1994 catalog. The Guide, (the Courier's successor) is shown as "new" in the 1995 catalog. The Courier is not shown in the 1995 catalog. I suppose that's a pretty good indication.

    Restored Mad River Courier

Kris, Nice work on the courier! I have a few MRC wood trimmed hulls; its nice to see another one, especially an older one, ready for the water. Your pix didn't show the decking. I'm curious, what did you do for decks? (In original MRC catalogs from the early 90s, Courier decks were a sheet of...

    Winter dreams, spring paddling

My thanks to those above who have taken a minute to welcome me. I appreciate that! Obviously, this site is a "virtual" community. From reading many other posts here, it appears that some actually know each other in the real world, but I'm guessing that for many of the 500 or so of us, it's just...

    Winter dreams, spring paddling

I haven't paddled much lately, ankle surgery last August has kept me out of boats, off bikes, and generally far too sedentary. But the doc gave me a green light last week, so I can start thinking/planning/dreaming of dipping a blade again into cool running water. I started reading Calvin...

    new member from Maryland

Balto Charlie, Welcome, I'm a newbie here myself, after reading/lurking for a while. I'm in Monkton, along the GP. Are you still looking for a solo? I have a (lightweight) kevlar MRC Indy (approx 36#) (wood rails) that I may be willing to part with. I got it used, but just don't have much...

Not a Half Bad Idea...if I do say so......

Um, I'm a relative newcomer to this site. I read frequently and post infrequently. No offense to anyone but I don't understand this post. I do want to say that I donated some money to the last fundraiser and quickly received 2 canoetripping.net stickers, in a hand addressed letter from Robin...

    Looks like a good deal?

Both a new Freedom and Explorer within a week? I just replied to your post about the Freedom a few minutes ago. I bought my Freedom to replace an Explorer (actually a 16' Duck Hunter, same hull, different color) because I wanted something with better river handling. I do think the Freedom is...

    16' Mad River Freedom

Thank-you again for accepting my recent registration. I've been reading the stories and anecdotes here for some time and have enjoyed many immensely. Since I own a MRC Freedom, I thought I had something worthwhile to share, and so finally registered. I purchased my Freedom new in 96. The specs...
