    Can anybody ID this canoe?

Not sure a boat like that is the best idea for a mature brand new paddler. I would start with something more sedate. I little more initial stability.

Thelon River, Northwest Territories & Nunavut (1993)

I knew of Alex and spent time at his web site before our trip when we were researching. I was sad to hear of his passing a few years ago. I have never been on a guided trip. Not interested in that. I am lucky to have a good friend that I trip with. He and I tend to put together of small group...

Thelon River, Northwest Territories & Nunavut (1993)

What a wonderful trip. I had the distinct pleasure and honor of experiencing a more truncated Thelon trip. We flew into a small lake on the Clarke, paddled down the Clarke to the Thelon, and then on down to Beverly where we ended our trip. Still, it was a magnificant trip with lots of...

Crossing the Canada-US Border in a Canoe

I live in Vermont. I once drove up Lake Memphramagog in a power boat with my wife and three little kids. I was oblivious to the need to stop at the customs office. All of a sudden a fast Canadian flagged boat with a light pulled me over like a speeding car on the interstate. He ordered me in...

Toward The Source: An Arctic Odyssey

IMHO - Jason and Don are both weekend warriors. One is more introspective. The other is less introspective. Neither will likely make their lives living off the land in a harsh environment, but if they do they will most likely do so with other human beings, not alone, I am a weekend warrior too...

    2020 St.John River Trip

Please say hi to Norm. Tell him Rob Gerety will be back for another shuttle sometime in the near future. Norm is a great guy.

    2020 St.John River Trip

I wasn't aware Alex died. That is sad news. I never met him, but he had quite the reputation - wildlife biologist maybe? He used to pull pups out of wolf dens and play with them. YIkes! No, we have never used a guide on a trip. We do the best we can all by our lonesome. So far no casualties...

    2020 St.John River Trip

Sounds like a great trip. I have paddled the Thelon - via the Clarke. Take out at Beverly Lake. Also, the Horton. And the Wind in YK. Don't know that air service. I hope you can pull it off.

    2020 St.John River Trip

I enjoy what I call the Lobster trip. If you bring two vehicles in you can leave one at the take out on Chesuncook Lake, drive to the put in on Lobster Stream. Paddle into Lobster Lake for night one. Paddle out to the West Branch for night two, paddle down into Chessuncook for night three...

Tripping with those you don't well know

Its just a lot more fun when you paddle with friends. On big trips its too much money and energy invested to take a risk on the group. Picking the crew is the number 1 most important part of a trip.

    2020 St.John River Trip

Yes, it is a difficult and sad time. Hope your 2021 plans work out. These are very hard times and we have yet to see the hit on the economy. Lots of unemployment. Its going to be a while folks. But, we will get there.

    2020 St.John River Trip

In Vermont our stay at home order was just extended through May 15, could go longer. Pretty tough to do social distancing on a canoe trip, no? No hotels or restaurants open. I guess it cold be done, but it would be tough and probably frowned upon by the department of health. Under our guidance...

    Gransfors Bruks Small Spliting Axe

I ended up with two of these and I want one to go to someone who will actually use it and take care of it. No reasonable offer refused. Its it great shape. Very little use. Nearly new condition. Original leather sheath included;.

    Pictograph Quest?

My tripping mates and I are beginning to get pretty serious about a "pictograph quest" as we begin to drift into the "final phase" of our canoe tripping lives. It might turn into one trip - or maybe several trips -over the next few years. We all live in northern New England but we have done...
