    trekking poles

Trekking poles are great for almost every hiking occasion in the boonies. I can't imagine how one might use them when portaging a canoe but, when you are carrying a heavy pack, etc. across a portage, they would be of great value, i.e. stopping a fall, feeling out the depth of a water-filled...

    Funny PFD PSA from NZ

paddling.net just posted a very funny PSA from NZ that everyone should see.

    Pfd

I totally agree; I'm not going to buy any PFD without trying it on. And I'm not going to order one without the ability to return it if it does not fit. I did want to point out that the Onyx MoveVent looked more interesting than most of the others that are locally available in fishing/hunting...

    Pfd

I just saw an ad for the Onyx MoveVent PFD. Looks interesting! I would guess it's designed for kayaking, but appears slim enough for canoeing. Front of one model looks smooth, with a zipper in the front. Ron

    Pfd

The ones I saw at Sportsman's Warehouse (or Gander Mt.) were just buckled, no zipper. The buckles were so big I didn't try them on; just looked uncomfortable! I think they would work great for a water skier or someone standing up in a boat, not sitting down and paddling all day long. Ron

    Lightweight Solo Tripping

I've settled in on an MSR Reactor Solo for my solo and +1 canoeing/backpacking needs. I tried Jet Boil but found it too flimsy. Also, did not use the insulated cup as they intended. I'm a tea drinker. the need to soak a bag for three - four minutes just seemed to beg for a 2nd cup so I chose a...

    Pfd

I had a chance to view three models from Onyx today. All seemed to have LARGE (1 1/2") buckles at the center of the chest; looked uncomfortable! I'll keep trying. Ron

    Pfd

Yellowcanoe, Sorry, I mis-read your reply. I am seeing nothing but short, kayak-style PFDs locally and it's just frustrating. I wish I could go to Canoecopis again and see all the manufacturer's models. I'll look at all the models that have been suggested here. Again, sorry; didn't mean it that way.

    Pfd

yellowcanoe, I guess I should have been more specific in that I'm not looking for a kayaking, outboard boating, fishing, etc. PFD but one that best fits the paddling constraints we are under. Everything now-days seems to have pockets which, when filled, are too protruding and would keep you from...

    Pfd

Has anyone discovered a PFD suitable for canoeing? I've been using my old EXTRASPORT for years. Simple, no pockets, no mesh, just a front zipper and two side cinch straps; just a bit bulky. I'm ready to retire it if I can find a suitable replacement. Everything I've found has too many "bells and...

    Lightweight Solo Tripping

Sorry, I got cut off right in the middle of a thought! In other words, look at lightening the gear that you now use by simple upgrades and eliminate duplicates or un-needed gear. As you replace items, consider lighter alternatives.

    Lightweight Solo Tripping

I agree with almost all that was said. Let's face it, few of us can own a quiver of canoes, i.e. one for each purpose. So cutting weight on the canoe, and the body we were dealt is probably not the place to start! How about looking at EVERYTHING you take with a critical eye as to use, weight...

    Lightweight Solo Tripping

A few years ago, I was working at a large outdoor store where I met some backpackers who had hiked many of the long, 500 mi.+, trails that abound in the U.S. They were looking for the lightest gear possible to make up their "kit" for their next adventure. They told me about "Cottage" gear...

    Survivorman in Temagami Forest

For all of you who may want some idea of what the Boundary Waters/Quetico area is like, take a look at Les Stroud's Survivormans program on him in the Temagami Forest.

    Outfitting Wenonah Ultra-Light?

Years ago, when I had/rented a canoe with aluminum thwarts, I suggested taking along several key hole-shaped shower curtain rings to fasten map cases, etc. to the thwarts. No weakening of the structure; easy to remove.

    Howdy from Colorado

I have been canoeing for a looong time, starting in Kentucky as I lead an Explorer Post, evolving to white water canoeing, then to white water kayaking with the Tenessee Senic Rivers Association (TSRA). Just before I moved to CO in 1976 I sold my beloved Blue Hole canoe, thinking I would remain...
