    One Armed Canoe Paddle?

Think it was about 20 years ago I saw a number of them being made, mainly to just keep the canoe straight for fishing.

    Lifting Canoe Packs Safely

My last 2 trips to the BWCA worked out fantastic, I take the heavy pack and let the 18/19 year old grandson carry it. Cost me plane tickets from CA but I loved every minute of it and would do it again in a heartbeat - or in 3 weeks if we can make schedules work.

How do you inflate your air mattress?

I bought a small (2 oz) rechargeable air pump that doubles as a great bellows to get a fire going.

Missouri Breaks in Montana, June 12-18, 2016

We got picked up at the Kipp bridge and all our gear and canoes were shuttled to Coal Banks.

    BWCA Temporary Closure 7/14/26

It's one of those weeks - highs in the humid 90's everyday and lows in the 70's at night that are miserable for camping anyway but I do feel for all the outfitters who will be losing at least a week of business.

The international wolf center is worth a stop as is the root beer ladies museum.

No more need for my Garmin inReach

Just got back from a trip to the BWCA with my grandson and discovered I no longer need my Garmin inReach! I have a Google pixel 9 phone and use Verizon and when I was out of all network availability it automatically switched to satellite mode. I was able to send and receive texts to and from...

Packing up a tent: Rain fly packed separate from tent body?

When I leave home they are always packed together but during a trip I tend to pack them separately.

Proposed Twin Metals Mine in MN near the BWCA

As a MN resident who has been to the BWCA over 200 times I'm torn. Mining if it can be done correctly does have a place but I would like to see it kept in the country. There are many hurdles to get past before any mining is done if ever, the Senate action did not directly open up mining...

    Chest Loads

I use Ursacks vs a bear vault, they are lighter and pack down as they are being emptied. Don't think I've ever triple portaged but I do usually double pack, I find a pack on front actually balances things out.

    Time for Paddling Slips Away

I totally agree, finally worked in a BWCA trip last summer with my oldest (18) grandson and decided those trips need to be my priority. Already have 2 BWCA trips booked with grandsons this summer and a CA to MN road trip planned with 3 or 4 of them.

    Canoeing Plans for 2026?

Moving into a stage of life where I have young strapping grandsons who want to go canoe camping with grandpa. 1st trip was last August in the BWCA with my oldest (18) grandson and we knocked off 15 new lakes I've never been to. Have a week booked in May with him again to explore a number of...

    Burning plastic

In MN (the Boundary Waters) it is illegal to burn any garbage. I do my best to repack what I can before a trip to minimize what garbage I need to pack out. I will admit to burning paper if there's no ink on it and coffee grounds and some food scraps although my pup usually makes sure there's...
