    Keeping fish simple

Catching them with his hands is impressive and then eating them raw also sounds impressive, but I think that was from the era when swallowing goldfish was actually a thing. So it wasn't such a leap to swallow a trout. I assume he didn't chew them up, let us know if he did.

    Where have we all paddled?

Being a long time rule breaker I'm gonna mention that I did paddle a sea kayak through the arch at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Paddling a kayak is better then sitting your butt on shore.

    Wind

Maybe it depends where you live. In both Ak and Pa it seems to have increased. In Anchorage we used to get 100mph winds a couple times a year, now they are much more frequent, stronger and last longer. In Pa, where I hadn't spent much time for 30 years I hear other people mention that the wind...

Photos of Animals, Fish, Birds & Bugs on a Canoe Trip

Marc O's photos are hard to compete with, but I think you got some good shots. Even with almost daily sightings of otters sometime I have yet to get a good photo.

The Spork, Do you use one?

I've never intentionally gone without a fork. Probably because one of my favorite meals is spaghetti, but that can be eaten with a spoon too.

How to recruit new canoe paddlers?

I've never converted any kayakers, but at least two people I'd taken on trips subsequently bought canoes and still do their own trips. Another guy, who said the trip I took him on was the best experience of his life had canoeing aspirations, but a dump in cold water on a lake in Idaho almost...

    Where have we all paddled?

You would probably know better than I Glenn. I was only there once and it was 35 years ago. The property was an old B&B right on the river. My wife remembers the owners name as Doug. I vaguely remember the business name as "Wild Waters," but I wouldn't swear to it. It probably wasn't a large...

The Spork, Do you use one?

You are probably right there Alan. You could easily get by without one, plus there is the safety factor. I once put a hole through my finger with a tine while aggressively wiping one off. I was surprised it didn't get infected.

The Spork, Do you use one?

So you don't bring a fork? I usually bring two spoons, one stays with my other cooking and easting utensils the other stays in a separate bag with my beverages, for coffee and powdered drinks.

The Spork, Do you use one?

This is an important topic as it has to do with fueling our bodies for trips and paddling in general. I remember the first time I saw a spork, probably in the 70s, I thought it was a great idea. I never did buy one though, probably too cheap. I started thinking about them recently when in an REI...

    Where have we all paddled?

That's nothing to be ashamed of these days, my G kids are the cutest b*st*rds I know.

    Where have we all paddled?

Here is my list in the order of how I did them. Pa, started out with trips on the Susquahhana, then canoe fishing and whitewater. NY, Took a long weekend whitewater course for my Honeymoon in 1990, on the upper Hudson at Glen Falls. Alaska, I moved to Ak in 91 and mostly did trips in...

    site member activity

Maybe that feature when you start a new thread that asks if the topic has already been discussed is discouraging more new threads. It gives the impression that we don't want multiple threads about the same topic. Maybe we don't, but some of the threads are years old and could be discussed...

    National Boy Scouts Day

My stint in the Scouts was short lived. I learned a few knots and took the motto of "Be Prepared" to heart. The best thing was the Boy Scout Manual, I really studied it and thought it was everything you needed to know for camping and the outdoors. Another thing that I still have is a pair of...

Paddler Magazine: Functional vs. Interpretive Freestyle Canoeing

I think “advanced canoe paddling techniques” should cover it. Or “ beyond the basics”

Paddler Magazine: Functional vs. Interpretive Freestyle Canoeing

"Freestyle" to me means it includes all paddling strokes and maneuvers, so I think it fits. I would say that my freestyle paddling from the stern is just another aspect of it. As it is known now it includes solo and tandem. Solo is typically done in solo boats or smallish tandems from a...

    New Record

Ice out trips are great, no bugs and no crowds. Just bring your winter clothes to stay comfortable.

    Hello from Florida

Nice photo of your 50 pounder with the traditional paddles and pack basket. We like that kind of stuff.

    Bird Management

They not only build nests on the decks of my overturned boats but one persistent robin kept trying to build on where the center thwart meets the hull. I've seen posted here somewhere that you can put a beachball in your stems to displace them.

Safest places to canoe in the USA after a nuclear war

I can get pasties in Northeast Pa. I always associated them with the East European community, who were mostly coal miners. They may have learned about them from the English and Welch, who were their bosses down in the mines. I was never a big fan of that dry dough but I'd eat one right now if I...
