Royalex / T-Formex vs. Tough Composites

I just got through that part of the trip yesterday. I very impressed with how they got the Nova out, and even more impressed that they were able to get it back into paddle shape (even with a little leak). Dutch all they had was two ropes and stubbornness/desperation. He kept saying they should...

4-person and 6-person tents for car camping canoeing

Thanks for the thorough review. That makes me lean towards your choice. Just my wife and I, no kids, and a strong preference for camping when it isn't hot out are all points in favor of the Base Camp. But I'm not buying a tent this season, so I've got time to figure it out.

The power of a flash flood on a placid stream

It's amazing how quickly the water levels came up.

4-person and 6-person tents for car camping canoeing

Glen can you share what features made you pick the Base Camp over the Westward? I like the specs of both of them and would not mind a tent I can stand it. (Or at least get close, I’m 6’ tall.)

Callan: Crowded Canoe Country Isn’t A Crisis

Steve this is what I assume the author means when he says “growing pains,” which implies that he believes it will get better with more time/education. At the risk of being cynical, that’s more faith than I have in the type of people in your example.

    Footbrace Thwarted

It does not, though I would not say it’s flush against the hull. I just put it away, if I have it out this weekend I can take some pics for you.

    Photo of the day

You have a much nicer boat.

    Footbrace Thwarted

My canoe was originally set up as a pack boat that I switched over to a standard canoe seat, so it has the Northstar yak pedals. They're bolted through the hull, they came that way from the factory. They're good pedals, they have a lot of adjustment room and are holding up quite well. I'm not...

    Footbrace Thwarted

I use my Northstar Trillium with the 4” seated drops and kayak foot braces. I find it to be a comfortable set up. Of course specs/numbers don’t tell the whole story, but our respective canoes are similar in width.

In defense of dams, which U.S. canoeists should worship!

I’ve been thinking about this while reading the other conversation about removing dams. Lake Nockamixon is my regular day paddle, a 1450 acre lake created by a dam. Without that getting in the water around here would be a challenge, particularly as the summer progresses and local rivers get low...

    Boating Lights

Thanks Ucanoe, all good points to consider. I don’t paddle any coastal areas/oceans, so I’m assuming Coast Guard regs don’t apply. But I will certainly be looking into the DuckWorks light. I don’t paddle much during evening/night, so I have some time to figure this out. This discussion does...

    Boating Lights

As the author of this thread I approve the drift. My plan (subject to change without notice) is to first try out the headlamp. This is very much because I already have a few of them, so I won't have to buy anything and I'll be meeting the requirements as presented by the PA overlords. Also...

    Paddle racks

I have a few of the Suspenz Paddle Rack similar to what Alan shared. They have rubber wrapping that holds the paddles in place and I found them to be worth the small extra expense.

    Boating Lights

I went for an evening paddle last night, so that's what got me thinking about it. The lake I usually paddle on has a 20hp restriction on motor boats, but it turns out if they're enthusiastic they can still get moving pretty fast. I didn't have any trouble last night, but still. The wakes were...

    Boating Lights

Pennsylvania requires all boaters (including unpowered boats) to carry a light. I've quoted the description of what's required below. Night Lights. Paddlers must carry a white light that is either hand-held or installed and ready to be displayed in time to avoid collision. All boats must show...

    BWCA Temporary Closure 7/14/26

Hey Neo, you do realize that the BWCA isn’t in Canada right? Why yes, I did remember that right after I hit Post Reply. Which is always the best time for such things. Regardless, it still seems pertinent so I’ll leave it as is.

    BWCA Temporary Closure 7/14/26

As much as Canada has been on fire over the last few years I’m surprised they’re doing controlled burns at all. But admittedly my knowledge of forest management is lacking.

    RedLeaf Designs kudos!

Thanks Tryin, I think you’ve convinced me. I only have a solo canoe so it sounds like it won’t be a problem.

    RedLeaf Designs kudos!

The gunwale bags are on my list as well, I just have to pick a size. The paddle pockets look nice as well.

    Greetings from N Central FL!

That's rough, I suppose a canoe is small consolation after that. Hope things are going well. Ha, was that supposed to be reassuring? Ok..so I'm being intentionally melodramatic about the gator thing. My wife and I visited Florida a while ago and had a good time. Visited some beaches and had a...
