Flat bottomed Alden Ocean Shell as decked canoe?

I saved a couple "ocean" rowing shells from a date with the dumpster. They need a bit of glass work, and the drop in rowing rigs and oars will be a signifigant investment, so I'm wondering how they would do as decked canoes. I'm having some technical difficulties getting pictures posted, so...

    Boat cover fabric options?

There are permiable hay tarps available, I think at tractor supply. If you put one of those over a shade cloth you might get the right ballance between protecting or stewing in juices.

    Phone charging for power users.

I use an relatively obsolete cell phone as a bike computer, with gps navigation and various Bluetooth sensors. The set up is a power hog so I run a bigger power bank and could get 3 days of every thing running pretty easily. The power bank is an Anker product, and the one thing I will do...

You might want add links to your build threads in this forum to your craigslist listings. A little education can cut down on the toe kickers.

    Playing with Kydex Again

I'd be tempted to put the whole assembly in the oven and see how the kydex "flows" when the entire piece is brought up to temperature.

    Painting a fiberglass canoe..??

I've got a Great Canadian that I paddled the heck out of for years. It spent a lot of winters under a cabin Down East and got borrowed quite a bit. Some of the cousins took it out in the fall and left it half in the water tied to a tree on labor day. Sometime After Thanksgiving I got a call from...

Addressing a canoe puncture in the field

I duct taped the ends of a Merrimack canoe back together after the stems rotted out. I used surplus 100 mph tape which looked ok with all the ends rounded off like a bandaid. My cousins got another 3 summers out of it.

    Wannigan or storage box?

That is a beautiful bit of wood working. I would be afraid to take that off the canoe and use in camp. If I had something like that I would rigidly attach it to the boat as a dry locker and additional floatation. And the build a couple kitchen boxes that fit inside. Or a plastic cooler...

    Can I borrow your axe?

I got to say that lending out an edged tool is just basically fraught with bad Juju, especially with old tools that have been brought back from rust with many hour of ones life. I've got a couple horror stories, and the axe or other blade is only one of the victims, as my opinion of the various...

    Can I borrow your axe?

For splitting small wood and making kindling in front of the fireplace im a fan of the froe. In a tent with a stove I've always batoned wood some sort of big knife. A big hack knife made out a lawn mower blade or big cleaver might be handy. You can keep a file edge on it and not shed a tear if...

Klepper Kamerad (Fiberglass Solo Decked Canoe Conversion) ? Price

Well I just happend across this post, while sitting and staring at my own Klepper Kamerad Kit, and I have a pretty good idea of what all the parts and materials and how much time you must have invested. 2k would be a good deal for the right person. I think listing it on the watertribe and...

Direct satellite link to ordinary, unmodified mobile phones by 2023-2024...

Theres also the group dynamic, and what constitutes an emergency. I have dealt with panicked people, and I would not want to argue about what constitutes an emergency. IE running out of food 2 days out, and I was the guy being stingy with the EIPRB.

= "when you absolutely need assistance" I agree that 2 way communication opens up a world of logistical convenience and effective anxiety management. Dead/Not Dead as a primary concern points to carrying an EPIRB as a personal choice. If I was doing anything more adventuresome or traveling...

Direct satellite link to ordinary, unmodified mobile phones by 2023-2024...

I'm more inclined to get an EPIRB at this point. Less to go wrong when you absolutely need assistance. And it's realy simple to take one on every outing without worrying about batteries and inconveniently lapsed subscriptions.

    Need some royalex advice

I've had good luck cleaning up glue on royalex with a sharp hand scraper filed to a bit of a curve and the corners relieved so they dont dig in. I've used goo gone and mineral spirits on royalex. Acetone will melt the outer layer, but a quick wipe seems to smooth sand paper scratches with out...

Putting up a Shelterlogic canoe shed.

Well I ended up shoveling 3-4 tons to the side, and spreading the rest out for a level pad from 4" to 9" over 24' . Crusher run may have been more appropriate, but the idea of setting up a level strong back won over the idea of working on a car in there. Big shocker yesterday as lumber...

Putting up a Shelterlogic canoe shed.

Apparently there's a learning curve to ordering gravel and translating between yards and weight. And some drivers have the knack and some don't. Now I've got an extra 4 tons to to put elsewhere with a shovel.

Putting up a Shelterlogic canoe shed.

Good points about the doors. I can put grommets on the bottom corners of the doors and clip them down with carabiners to the frame.
