As I started this thread, cell phones may replace satellite communicators - someday.

Rutabaga sells "boats" and much more at canoecopia. They move the store for the week and order a lot.

I carry one but can go for many trips without using it. I also have a hat - baseball style - with two lamps built into brow and flat batteries tucked in headband.

I wonder how many people are alive today because they were in a canoe instead of on the highway?

Not too many places in the Adirondacks you can't get out from in a day walking, and their are marked trails. Not so in BWCAW and Quetico. And just looking at the trip from Minnesota to Hudson Bay.

I respect the no tech in the back country and practice it with exception of communication for my wife. I made the mistake once of taking my cell phone and having it on. Sitting on the shore at South end Bald Eagle I got a business call. Ended up an hour long meeting. It was unique and doing it...

I followed on trip on BWCA.COM. He had his spot set to display location in a post, like every 5 minutes. It was fun to follow his trip. He left it on while in one camp and you could follow him to the thunderbox. I just try to keep my wife happy, so report in.

It's early in terms of this technology but the single device is appealing. My cell phone battery lasts a week or longer so no different, plus all I used my spot now zoleo for is texting my wife, so still need cell phone.

I camped at Sabattis in the 60s and canoed a little. Sad they had to close it.

You all have some great plans. Besides some day trips around me, I hope to do maybe 10-12 days on NFC, plus two work weekends with them. I will be at Canoecopia in March.(Should we plan a canoe tripping get together?) And if possible, a bwca or Quetico trip in September or October would be terrific.

Since I posted above I've done a 60 mile piece on the NFCT - Racquet Lake to Saranac - and my T-Mobile cell seemed to have signal everywhere.

I started at 52 as an adult leader with my sons Scout troop who had a tradition of doing a BWCAW trip each August. Sounded like fun so I went and was hooked. 22 years later mostly solo.

I also wondered if I could get a shower at the fishing camp very near Allanwater Bridge? I have in mind to travel from Toronto by rail.

If returning by train from the Allanwater Bridge, how do you adjust for one itable delays? All I could figure was a two way satellite communicator and someone watching and communicating with you.

For me, probably 20 years attending Canoecopia, it's the presentations. I think 18 time slots and 10 to 15 sessions each slot. I like what I call the travelog sessions - basically live trip reports with images - but lots of how-tos and some interesting related topics. I have trouble narrowing...
