    Boating Lights

As to boat lamps - do an internet search for "suction cup boat lights". I found one in the water and mounted on the stern of a canoe it would probably meet the bill for night boat lighting.

    Boating Lights

Throwing a line to floater is much better than letting them grab onto your boat, until you can assess their panic level. And of course, you don't need to throw it very far, unlike a land based throw. I paddle solo about 90% of the time and I carry my 75 ft throw bag on nice weekends when the...

Yellowstone bison attacks old man in campground

I'm going to vote that grandpa was irresponsibly close to a bison bull that had been clearly behaving in an agitated and unpredictable manner within the campground... and the results seem to prove that to be correct. If he was acting responsibly, he wouldn't have gotten tossed, or even drawn...

Yellowstone bison attacks old man in campground

Bison go everywhere in Yellowstone Park, it is not a zoo.

Yellowstone bison attacks old man in campground

Walking up to take a cell phone photo of an angry bull bison was the problem. Always make sure that several dumb people are between you and the bison...it's common knowledge.

Yellowstone bison attacks old man in campground

ALL bison are potentially aggressive, at any moment, and without any warning. The NPS has pamphlets and warning signs all over at Yellowstone and people still walk up to the fuzzy cows. The NPS says to stay back 25 yards, but when I've been there, I get wary at a hundred and won't go anywhere...

Driving with your canoe on the car all summer long

You couldn't get me to shut up if we had a sarcasm font.

Driving with your canoe on the car all summer long

No offense but my 20+ years as a lead engineer calculating aerodynamic loads for Boeing suggests that you don't have a clue. So, here's a quick tutorial... 1 - force increases by the square of the speed. And, it works for everything.... double your speed and the force quadruples, triple your...

How to recruit new canoe paddlers?

First of all, there are different types of kayakers. You might have pretty good luck getting a seakayaker to like canoeing - in fact, I got back into canoeing after building and using 3 sea kayaks and discovering that I really felt much more at home in a canoe. I must have had the dumbest...

Driving with your canoe on the car all summer long

As a former aerodynamic loads engineer, one canoe on a roof can be quite aerodynamic (it does depend on the shape of the vehicle), but 2 canoes on a roof is as aerodynamically clean as having a refrigerator with the door flapping in the wind up there, no matter what you are driving.

Driving with your canoe on the car all summer long

That's silly. I drive a 4 cylinder Subaru and have never noticed any decrease in fuel mileage while caring a single canoe. One time, I drove from Seattle to Connecticut.

Driving with your canoe on the car all summer long

I stored my Royalex Penobscot on my car for about 6 months with no problem, other than it was extremely convenient to go canoeing at any moment. That was over 10 years ago, still have the canoe, no problems.

Cedar canoes aren't made from cedar trees

You're right. I was just using the common name.

Cedar canoes aren't made from cedar trees

I carve my own one piece canoe paddles, and Spanish Cedar is my favorite wood. Lightweight, easy to carve, doesn't warp or split with use.

    Accessories - wrong answers only

I recently converted a bilge pump into a bidet. I can send you instructions if you can't figure it out on your own.

    Light weight vs strong laminate

The saddest thing on Antiques Roadshow is the antique toy that was never played with. The same rule applies to canoes.

Photos of Animals, Fish, Birds & Bugs on a Canoe Trip

Shephaug reach of Lake Lillinonah, CT. May 23, 2026 Class time - An adult Bald Eagle perched about 20 yards away had stashed a Great Blue Heron carcass in a tall snag for two newly fledged Eagles to learn how to feed themselves. I heard some whistling while I was checking my photos and zoomed...

US and CA approve "Level 50" PFDs: What they are

By the way, the fine print... The 50N does not count as a PFD unless it is worn. Strapping it to the deck does not meet the regulations.

US and CA approve "Level 50" PFDs: What they are

Personally, I'd like to know that I tried to get the guy wobbling about in the coleman to put on a pfd when I read the accident report a few days later.
