Does anyone have experience with a Wenonah Escapade?

Just for clarification, we're about your size, and the couple in the Escapade were about our build and maybe a little taller.

How to recruit new canoe paddlers?

After seeing the size of the snapping turtle that visited us, I'm going to take a pass on swimming in the BW, with or without clothes....but especially without.😱

How to recruit new canoe paddlers?

Thanks for contributing that. I have suspected that to be the case, having only gone as far as three portages. Not much different from what I see in other places. One or two miles in on foot, most people are done. Three miles on foot, might as well be a hundred.

Does anyone have experience with a Wenonah Escapade?

I haven't been in one, but my wife and I paddled next to one for a while. We were in the Malecite. I would say from that brief exposure that it's comparable to the Malecite. Possibly a little harder tracking IIRC. Should be perfect for your size in the use you describe.

How to recruit new canoe paddlers?

Again, I've only been there twice, so my perspective is different. While I'm aware that it's often referred to as "wilderness", I don't quite see it as so. I have the Frank Church to compare with it. Now, that's wilderness - by lower 48 standards. If I'm being careful I would go only so far as...

Good Find? LL Bean Edition-Old Town Camper 16ft

@canoekevin, what a great idea! I have a few of those around here too. Now I know what to do with them.

How to recruit new canoe paddlers?

I have several kayaker friends who have dropped out of paddling altogether for that same reason. I think there is just a natural resistance at some point to learning new things.

Good Find? LL Bean Edition-Old Town Camper 16ft

Looks like at least the one stem hasn't been ground off. That's a good sign. If the wood isn't rotting, the seat frames could be cleaned up and refinished after cutting away the old caning, then turn them over and give them polyester webbing. Check for end rot on the frames and the yoke before...

How to recruit new canoe paddlers?

You have a point. The BW didn't feel crowded to me either time I was there, but we did see several groups searching for a campsite this last time. Idunno.... seemed like they would have been well served to get an earlier start on their day. My takeaway though is that campsites are so dispersed...

Cedar canoes aren't made from cedar trees

Amen. Personal beekeeper pet peeve..... every flying insect with a stinger is a "bee". And let's not get into the issue of what is or isn't a hornet. I am horrible at wood identification. Much of the wood I have stocked came from auctions, estate sales, and salvage. Identification for me is...

    That explains a lot.

How to recruit new canoe paddlers?

I've been doing that for years. Haven't seen any effect. Could be my location. This just isn't canoe country.

    Welcome flag

Might have been a good thing to have last week. A family with kids appeared from around the point just as a squall got really dangerous. It would have been a really good time for them to find our campsite empty, but they turned and went back out of sight before we could communicate with them...

Following wind, waves, and canoe design. Where to next?

@Alan Gage if I had more time in Ely, I could have paddled a Magic too. I wanted to, but the impending Independence Day celebration and crowds complicated things and I needed to get on the road. I have little doubt that I would like it more than the Prism, but I am reaching the conclusion that...

Following wind, waves, and canoe design. Where to next?

On that's note - @Canoe 1885 , what can you tell me about your Merlin II's handling in wind general with a tripping load? I got to spend about an hour in a Redfeather Merlin III which I am told is essentially the same boat, but of course other than me it was empty. I was shocked to see it took...

Following wind, waves, and canoe design. Where to next?

Now that I've spent a few days paddling a Prism in the wind (a story for another thread), I have a little more to go on. It was interesting to me that I had less trouble going downwind in the Prism than I do in the Solitude. The Prism is definitely more work going upwind. But here's a rub. I...

Best canoe dog for wolf protection

Read a story years ago about a guy who used goats to carry his backpacking load. He said they demanded to come in the tent when it rained. Also said they were useful if he ran out of food. Might have been some element of revenge in that.
