    Poll: Rudders

Hilariously, the WPASCR this June is where I paddled the Savage River Falcon and got my first exposure to a ruddered craft.

    tent cleaning and treatment

Sticky from forest detritus or sticky because the waterproofing is breaking down? I've had to toss two tents due to the latter. One was warrantied by Nemo, great company, one was a write off.

    Poll: Rudders

Last month, I paddled a canoe with a rudder for the first time. It was nice in one way and a little soulless in another. Kind of like double vs. single blade, or maybe corrective stroke paddling vs. hit and switch. It was interesting to just be more of a motor than constantly adjusting some...

Cannibalism is Bad for Your Health

@recped 's chicken will live on forever. Which, incidentally, is only one day longer than he is willing to store it for consumption.

Cannibalism is Bad for Your Health

Not as bad as it is for other people's health.

Driving with your canoe on the car all summer long

Haha, so true! Add in terrible starting aero and it gets even closer. For example: 1994 Chevy G20: 14.8 slick, 14.3 with two tandems on top over a 700 mile test, varied conditions.

    Old Canoe

What condition? Motor included? Recently restored? Estimates for top condition, period-correct motor included, collector interest level: $1800-$2500 Average condition, no motor, no collector interest: same as most other old fiberglass canoes. $300-$600

refurbish a carbon composite C4 canoe

@yknpdlr I assume the preferred method would be application via HVLP spray gun, like an automotive clearcoat over paint. You can get a quote from your local autobody shop. You can also DIY the project via harbor freight tooling or rattle cans. A C4 will take a LOT of cans. A Harbor Freight air...

    Savage River Blackwater solo canoe

@yknpdlr your experience with this hull and similar hulls is extremely helpful. Thank you for posting your knowledge. I am talking to Ben at Savage River about a possible "XX" volume option, which would build the bubble out another 3/4". Hopefully it won't flatten the bottom too much, but we...

    Savage River Blackwater solo canoe

@Superdave thank you for posting your experience! I might take you up on that offer later this summer, @ABT knows I'm willing to drive to IL to try boats...😄 The base price on the Swift is $1k less than the Savage River, but equivalent options catch it right up. Its only money, right?

Another question: what bike trailer are you using? We now have an 11-mile asphalt path to a nearby reservoir and I am considering picking up a trailer to get an extra bit of cardio.

    Light weight vs strong laminate

I have once again had my mindset tweaked on this. My YouTube watch history for the past couple of weeks has largely consisted of events like the Texas Water Safari and the Au Sable Canoe Marathon. Those boats are LIGHT. Like 28lb tandem light. And somehow, they survive being thrown down...

    Old Town Osprey 140

Quicker the better, but not really critical. UV will damage the inside-y parts of the royalex fairly quickly, and water ingress is generally considered "sub-optimal". Dynel is the material de jour for skid plates. Its really not too difficult a task.

    Old Town Osprey 140

Yeah, as long as the core isn't rotting there, its a pretty easy fix. Even if the foam is deteriorating, that small of an area isn't a big deal. Look through the "skid plate" threads for lots of ideas on repairing the damage.
