Tom Thomson 16' Cedar Canvas Canoe Raffle - Huntsville, Canada

Arrrrgh Murat! You've just lessened my chances of winning...😀 Bought my tickets a while ago but thanks for bringing this up As an aside Langford also have a new kevlar canoe model called the Thomson moulded in dove grey. My daughter rented one for the 150 canoes on Canoe Lake event last month...

    Name on back of PFD?

Mike I do a lot of paddling on Voyageur Canoe Brigades and having name on your pfd (and other stuff) is essential to keep track of it in a large group but also when you are paddling in a canoe with 6 to 8 others you've just met That said- most just use a permanent Sharpie to add your name. Chestnut Pal

You're right! the rear seat setup does look strange- good eyes! Definitely not a factory setup that I know of- my hangers were replaced using originals for length. Bruce

    Canadian Canoe Museum 2017

I've been a member of the Museum for a few years now- and getting into the holding rooms would be a treat! The best part of most of my visits are spent in the shops watching and talking to volunteers as they build or restore canoes, carve paddles. There are always open to questions and freely...

    Chestnut Chum in Mass.

Thanks for the info- that's exactly the kind of info i was looking for. I haven't used my Bobs for tripping- mostly day long paddles in Georgian Bay/Trent Severn/Lake Simcoe. And solo, yes i like to heel it over and paddle from one side. The Pal is the one that is used more for longer trips-...

    Canada 150

For me, spending July 1st paddling your canoe is the ultimate way to celebrate Canada. Me too! And we'll be celebrating by joining the Fort Edmonton Voyageur Brigade as they paddle the North Saskatchewan River through Edmonton tomorrow! Bonne fete a tous! Bruce

    Chestnut Chum in Mass.

Great looking canoes! Well done. I keep hearing that Chum is such a great canoe- what gives it that cachet? Better than the Bobs Special? I really like my 16' Pal but my 15' Bobs Special is that much lighter and more manoeuvrable. Are the Chum and Bobs that different to paddle? I'd love to do...

    What PFD do you use?

Good old Canadian made Salus Solo! Comfortable, light and roomy. Upgrade might be to a Salus Ungava with bigger pockets- can never have enough room for paddling snacks on a day long paddle! Bruce

    Water, water everywhere ...

Dumb question- can you use a gravity filter in canoe while paddling or is it just when camped? They do seem like they way to go for base camp but on a long lake we'll pump to fill water bottles as we go. Bruce

    Water, water everywhere ...

Two votes for MSR Miniworks filter pump- use it in canoe while paddling and at the campsite. Our original was also 1991 vintage- wedding gift- but alas now sits on bottom of Isaac Lake in the Bowrons... And agreed- regular cleaning of ceramic filter is a must but is dead simple. Bruce

    Portaging questions

Very Interesting discussion. We haven't done anything but double portage on canoe trips in the last dozen years or so- somehow 2 lighter trips seems to beat 1 HEAVIER trip every time now. That said, I've always taken the canoe first, mostly i guess to allow others to come ashore at the portage...

    Creating a wanigan...........

Sven- love the look of yours. That is kind of what we were going for. Fibreglassed, eh? Was hoping that Shellac and varnish would be enough to seal it. How are you attaching the lid? I'm looking for ideas... Bruce And Murat- your Blog was one of the reasons we figured we could build our own...

    Creating a wanigan...........

No Title Late to the party...as usual... This is an idea we crafted this winter using some leftover cedar strips and using steam bending to replicate the tumblehome of my Chestnut Pal. We roughed the dimensions from the inside of my canoe. Its still a work in progress- haven't figured out how...

    Breakfast ideas

Good call! Love Kicking Horse coffee but didn't realize you could get it in Ontario, too. Kick arse and Half- arse (at work) are how i get get through each morning. And the beans are also available as ground coffee for canoe trips. We use individual French Press mugs... Bruce

    Wooden paddle for Canoe tripping

Can't help you with the Fishell- looked at that site when I was looking for a couple more Kettlewells last year. My go to paddle is my Kettlewell Ottertail for over 25 years now, a matching custom decorated pair were given as wedding gifts. My second paddle is a bent shaft that is especially...

    Chestnut Pal

Robin- what paint did you use for your Pal? I need to repaint my wife's green Bobs Special but she doesn't want it too light... I have a can of Rustoleum Tremclad Green that I like but she's worried it might be too light. Help! Bruce
