Pickup Truck and Fifth Wheel - Front Receiver Rack

That’s what I did. I installed a front receiver hitch on my 3500 Ram and used a Thule T-bar and a Thule roof mount and bar on the cab of the truck. Unlike you, we did the opposite and traded our 5th wheel for a Class C. Traded the Ram for a Jeep Gladiator to flat tow behind the Motorhome and...

Poll: How old were you when you got YOUR OWN first canoe (and what was it)?

Here is a picture of me and my 1st canoe. It was probably around 1980 and is on the Buffalo River. The other guys on this trip were from where I worked and my brother-in-law.

So, what old item do you still use?

The oldest piece of camping gear still in use and the 1st thing we bought, was a 2 burner Coleman stove. The 2nd oldest was a Teflon griddle so I could fix pancakes. The Teflon griddle was used up until last year when the Teflon received a deep scratch and lost some of its coating. Good news...

Vehicle problems while driving, or parking, to and fro canoe trips

Back about 1979 went on a camping/canoe trip on the Big Piney in Arkansas, with some friends. At the time we had a VW Campmobile. The next morning after breakfast we loaded everybody into the VW (Joe, his wife, two little girls, my wife, our son and me, we left Long Pool Recreation campground...

Rack advice for Jeep Wrangler JKU

I do not have a Wrangler, I have a Jeep Gladiator with the removable top. I’m using Yakima gutter mount on the cab. It is very secure using the gutter mounts. I suggest you go to <etrailer.com> enter the info for your Wrangler. It will show you what fits a Wrangler. They also have a video...

Poll: How old were you when you got YOUR OWN first canoe (and what was it)?

Got our 1st canoe when I was about 30. It was a 17’ Coleman. I bought it from a friend. If I remember correctly, I paid him a $125. I don’t think it had ever been in the water. The good thing about it, was it was roomy, durable and ours. We could go where we wanted, when we wanted. We had...

The first canoe you ever PADDLED and the circumstances

The 1st canoe I ever paddled was an aluminum 17’ Osage, on the Buffalo River, in Arkansas. Probably around 1979 or 80. It was a group of guys from where I worked. It was a collection of guys, none of whom had ever been in a canoe. Needless to say, we had a good time and I have some fond...

    Camp Dutch Oven Cooking

Check out a GSI Anodized Aluminum DO. Considerably less weight and won’t rust. Should be great for canoe tripping.

    Camp Dutch Oven Cooking

When camping I still like using my Coleman stove. The smell of bacon and potatoes cooking outside is a great way to start a new day. This stove was one of our first pieces of camp gear, purchased about 1980. Most of the camp stoves you see these days are propane.

    Camp Dutch Oven Cooking

I read somewhere about inverting the DO and decided to try it. It makes it easier to get the pizza when it’s finished baking. The main problem is not having a raised rim to help contain the ashes.

    Hello from Arkansas

Neophyte, do a search for Big Piney. There are several sites with info. A lot of the Big Piney is in the Ozark National Forest. It’s also classified as a Wild and Scenic River.

    Hello from Arkansas

We are both 75 and have been canoeing for 50 years. First canoe was a 17’ Coleman, that I bought used from a friend. Second canoe was a 15’ Coleman that was a freebie when we bought our Coleman pop-up camper, in 1985. Our main canoe is a 16’ Nova Craft Prospector. We also have two Old Town...
