Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

StraightER, flatER, and LESS pushy. It's all relative 🙂

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

Thanks for your thoughts, Steve. I've heard of ballasting amidships so the stems rise for paddling in open-water waves. Wasn't sure the same applied for poling but it makes sense. The poling creek I was on this week often barely has enough water to float, so I won't be adding ballast there...

    Seen This Type of Canoe?

Your son should rescue it and use it! I've never tried one but hear great things - very lightweight and surprisingly durable, so they say. Cape Falcon is a company that makes kits and instructional videos on building these - he's added rowing and sailing rights to them as well.

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

Water levels are decently high at my creek again, great for practicing eddy-outs and peel-outs, which I spent some time on Thursday and yesterday. A couple things I'm chewing on: I was without bow ballast both days. I was trimming back a fair bit (two hops from the yoke backets) to get the...

    On-the-fly adjustable seat height?

Not to dissuade you from CW Outfitting, but a Wenonah dealer with a robust ecommerce platform may also serve. Rutabaga comes to mind, as did Oak Orchard and Austin Canoe & Kayak. Seems like Oak Orchard doesn't stock Wenonah parts and Austin apparently folded in 2022, sadly. I sure hope...

    On-the-fly adjustable seat height?

Could you replicate the pattern in wood seat drops to attach to your wood gunnels? (Marine?) plywood maybe?

    On-the-fly adjustable seat height?

Are folks so scared of liability and lawsuits these days that they can't risk selling you parts? Good find, I might have to look into them for my Wenonah...or other boats that shall remain unnamed I suppose.

    What are you reading?

I didn't know about him til I happened upon this book, but I'm definitely planning to read more of his work now.

    Photo of the day

First outing of 2026. Should been doing other things but when it's in the high 70's F in March, sometimes you just gotta hit the water. Ice went maybe a couple weeks back but the weather and my schedule haven't coincided til now.

    What are you reading?

I recently finished Vanished Beyond the Map: The Mystery of Lost Explorer Hubert Darrell by Adam Shoalts. It was a fantastic read (I listened on Libro.fm, actually) about an explorer of the Canadian Arctic, highly respected by the famous explorers of the day but someone who never sought fame...

Jokes and Laughter for the Day

Well, that's one advantage to an aluminum canoe - don't have to worry about spilling burning coals in one.

Thoughts on Northstar Polaris or Northstar Boreas?

I don't have much to add, but following out of curiosity. What are the specs on your Curtis, @tketcham ? A brief web search didn't turn them up. What's the weight and layup of yours?

    Alder antifreeze for snowshoes/skis?

Snapper, I usually leave my skis on the porch to keep them at temp. But there are a fair number of days where I live where temps are within a few degrees of freezing, and in full sun the snow really starts to clump often. So I have sticking snow clumps pretty often, relatively speaking. Guess...

    Alder antifreeze for snowshoes/skis?

I just finished Trap Lines North by Meader, recommended by folks on the What Are You Reading thread. Great read, highly enjoyable, esp this time of year. On page 195, the book says "They had painted their snowshoes with a concoction brewed from alder bark, which prevented the slush from...

    Millbrook Boats up for Sale?

If I recall correctly, it went to Ed Hayden's daughter after his passing.

    Millbrook Boats up for Sale?

I've come to really appreciate my Souhegan's light weight and durability. Sadly they're not made any more and the mold isn't with Millbrook, even if it does sell and keep going. I don't know why more boats aren't made with a similar layup for whitewater touring. Lighter than royalex and...

    Black Cherry Phoenix

On second review of this thread, those cherry rails were such a good move - they complete the look of the boat way better than something light like ash would have. Well played, ABT!
