    Blacklite hd

It (HD) makes good sense to me. A Phoenix in normal BL seems way too fragile for most streams I’ve paddled. I owned one for a couple years, didn’t use much due to fear 🤣.

    Ausable River camping rules.

There should be artificial trees in drive-in campgrounds - metal posts with cross beams and hooks - akin to established fire pits and grates. I hate camping in full sun where all the trees are dead. I’ve been down the Ausable. It’s crowded. I’ve seen 5* campsites in BWCA ruined by overuse...

Headlamps. Do you guys use 'em?

I carry two, and extra batteries, used one yesterday for painting the hallway. Don’t leave home without!

So what exactly is everyone up to in their non-boating hours?

College basketball, which is now pro basketball, losing some of its luster. I’m going to focus on mid-majors next year, where there’s still student athletes. And then there’s home repairs. And walking the dogs.

    Installed Footbrace on P15

My wife used to trip with me. She paddled a solo canoe through Woodland Caribou PP in 2018. She enjoys not being in the bow and controlling her own pace. She still enjoys a canoe on lakes, but on the rocky streams around here, she’ll either be in the P14 with me or in her plastic yak. It’s a...

    Installed Footbrace on P15

Yes. On the rocky stream nearby, my bride likes her yak. Same setup on or other car so we can self shuttle.

    Installed Footbrace on P15

Yes, the bar telescopes. It is important to remember that the Northstar Footbrace is made for narrow solo canoes. When ordering, I asked NS to cut the tubes a few inches longer to fit a 35” wide tandem hull. They were happy to do it. This is my 2nd P15 install. It’s great to talk to...

    Installed Footbrace on P15

Yes, I bent the bracket just a little in a vice to better fit the curvature of the bow. Also, the rivet in the middle hole pulled it right up against. The adhesive is a fast drying kind that gets really hard. I’ve used it before with the carbon fiber mounts on Kevlar boats. This is my first...

    Installed Footbrace on P15

It was warm today so I got the Esquif Prospector 15 down and outfitted her with stuff I need. I placed the footbrace so it can be used from either seat. Thanks to whomever gave me the tip about dipping my finger in mineral spirits to finish the adhesive beads. Looks very clean. I used one...

    What are you reading?

I just finished Into the Ice. Great book if you know any sailors or have an interest in the early NW passage expeditions. It’s really two stories, one about the author’s journey and also the lost Franklin expedition. Very well written. My son wants to sail the NW passage when his cancer...

    Canoeing Plans for 2026?

My 46 year old son just finished radiation and had a prostectomy in 2024. He’s been on hormone treatment since last August. I hope you get your treatment over and get back on the water soon.

    Installed the Rack

Got it leveled out. 3 calls to “Technical Support” were fruitless. The technicians were clueless about their products other than the fit guide. Frustrated, I removed the feet from the crossbars and identified how the pitch adjustment is supposed to work. Should have done that right off.

    Installed the Rack

I’m not thrilled with the way this rack fits. The landing pads need to be angled more. I’ll call Yakima (and try to speak with a human) to see if they have a better landing pad to compensate for the roof angle.

    Installed the Rack

Continuity is important too. I got the same Yak on my Explorer. Yes, they’ve gone up dramatically. I find their stuff lasts, though, and why skimp when safety is the #1 issue? I may move the feet a few mm closer to see if that flattens the angle on the rear bar. It just doesn’t look right.

    Installed the Rack

Good weather yesterday so I installed the roof rack on the wife’s new RAV4. The crossbars don’t point the same direction; the bars’ profiles are at different angles. Also, the factory rails on the car are not parallel. The rear feet are 3” inches closer together than the front. On my...

What's changed for better or worse over your canoeing lifetime?

How many here had $1200 for a canoe in 1975? I think the question is probably meant to be about the “state of the art” differences. However, the individual cannot be dismissed from the equation because a “lifetime” is a personal metric. In retrospect, I started with horrible gear, and I was...

    Obsolete Stuff

I’d love to learn to use a sextant. Probably not going to happen in this lifetime, but an intriguing skill.

    Obsolete Stuff

Anyone have a collection of triangles and French curves? Rapidiograph pens? I actually could have used these tools recently.
