    Alan's Bloodvein II

Well, Sunday came & went (maybe I meant next Sunday) but I'm back to making some progress. I got the inner gunwales fitted this afternoon & I probably do them a little differently than most. First, I loosely clamp them near the center of the hull so that they overlap (I've never tried...

    Bird Management

Barn Swallows are great in lots of ways. Urban (OK, rural) legend is that lightning will not strike a building with swallows.

Beautiful job! Do you have a final weight?

The first canoe you ever PADDLED and the circumstances

Especially when camping & canoeing, I can appreciate caveman-like moments. I'm sure my first was a huge aluminum tandem in the Scouts. A few trips on local rivers and I was a lifeguard teaching paddling (row boats and canoes) at the summer camp. Didn't have a clue what I was doing but we...

    Solo on the Light Side

I always get a few of those (sometimes more than a few). I like how that cleaned up.

Paddlemap.net: Canoe Navigation and Trip Planning

I was surprised to see the Steel River loop on it & it seems pretty accurate except that it is missing the access from Eaglecrest lake. Personally, I'd much rather do the loop from Eaglecrest than paddle the length of Santoy. I played with it a bit to see if I could add the Eaglecrest access...

    Solo on the Light Side

Wow, that looks great and the weight is awesome. Nicely done.

    Mini Campers

I think Scamp (Boler?) is still making trailers. I looked at a couple for my daughter before her career plans changed and they seem to hold their value pretty well. My first trip to Canada, I ran across a family of 5 towing one behind a tiny car. Looked like a pretty efficient set-up.

My trio of custom Bruce Smith paddles.........

Ooo... that'll really darken nicely as it ages. I haven't tried Butternut yet... looks really sharp.

My trio of custom Bruce Smith paddles.........

Welcome. The one the right looks like Sassafras. What are the others... Walnut with some sapwood? If so, what does something like that weigh? Anyway, nice looking collection.

    Ramp for Car Topping

I've never used them to load canoes but I have some plastic car ramps that might work. They are very portable but it's really hard to find any that give you more than 6 inches of lift. These look like they'd give you 9 inches (mine are about 10 but I can't find them anywhere)...

    Camp Dutch Oven Cooking

I have a white gas camp stove and a dutch oven. I take neither on trips these days but I DO like the upside-down idea. I've never thought to do that but definitely will now.

Paddlemap.net: Canoe Navigation and Trip Planning

Quite an ambitious undertaking if you intend to map the entire planet. I messed around with it a little on 2 routes I'd researched previously and it showed required portages accurately on the West Branch of the Susquehanna (the portage around Curwensville Dam is shown as requiring a vehicle...

    Hello from Arkansas

Welcome. I'd heard of the Buffalo and have considered paddling it but I wasn't aware of Big Piney either. Sounds like a good destination and it's great to see that there are some people willing to provide shuttle services.

Wanna Paddle Lake Superior in February

I'm pretty sure that I stood on that same beach in Sept. of '23. (never gets old seeing a picture or YouTube video and thinking "I remember that place") It was tempting to paddle out onto the big lake that day but I needed to get home. Nothing at all like Glenn's video but I understand that...

    Mystery Craft

Looks like a great way for some of our far North friends to dispose of some income. Whatdya think @memaquay?

Wanna Paddle Lake Superior in February

Possibly in August but I'm not a fan of big water (and there's few bigger). My initial response to Glenn's video would have sent me to detention for multiple profanity filter violations.

    Help with a canoe cart

That would require a really good friend... I like solitude so they'd have to get lost until the next portage.

2026 Western Pennsylvania Solo Canoe Rendezvous

I have options. I may modify an existing trailer (I'll look like something from the Beverly Hillbillies but who cares?), I may borrow a trailer or I might just make 4 trips (or less, depending on how I make out finishing the last two hulls). It's only an hour away (2 hour round trip), so many...

    Alan's Bloodvein II

Interview went well, thanks. She may have even convinced me that they'd be a good fit. I stopped over today to see what kind of disaster I made yesterday and was very pleasantly surprised. Despite everything, the final result is probably the cleanest I've done so far. There were a few places...
