    1st Knife Recommendations

We presented the Opinel to him. When we arrived in camp he quickly started whittling. It wasn't long before I hear "Grampy, do we have any bandaids?" It was a minor laceration. I believe it gave him more respect for blades. His dad had also bought him a knive. He went with a Victorinox. My wife...

    Waldo Lake, Oregon

I spent three nights at Waldo Lake with my Son and Grandson. The original plan was for a longer trip with paddle in dispersed camping, but we settled for a campsite in the Shadow Bay Campground on the southeast side of the lake. The area is notorious for mosquitoes in early to midsummer. We...

    1st Knife Recommendations

I don't remember how old I was when I revieved my first knife. I was very young. As kids, it seems like my brother, friends and I always had knives. The first ones were traditional folders and then lockblades and fixed blades of varying quality. I did know a kid who nearly died from a knife...

Thank you for all of the great suggestions. I don't want to kill this thread, but I bought an Opinel Jr. No. 7. https://www.opinel-usa.com/products/opinel-no7-outdoor It was delivered yesterday. I am not sure about the rounded tip. I will need to get him a more traditional knife in the future...

    1st Knife Recommendations

I am not sure what they will be using in the camp. I plan on giving him a knife when my Son and I take him on a trip in a couple of weeks. I have never had an Opinel. I thought the could also be locked closed?

    1st Knife Recommendations

I will be taking my 10 year old Grandson on a trip soon. He will be learning about knives during survival camp this week. I plan on giving him a knife. This will be his first. I am thinking a folder. I am currently leaning towards an Opinel No. 6. Any recommendations for a first knife?

Satellite Communicator (Garmin In Reach Mini II) questions.

I still use a SPOT Gen 3. I did test it once with an unintentional swim. The water did not harm it at all. When I am in the back country, I generally leave it on tracking mode. I figure if I ever go missing, they can always start looking from the last tracing point. I also kind of like that I...

    G-Flex for Gelcoat Repair

I am planning a trip with my Wenonah WWC-1 in about a month. I was thinking of covering a few areas of exposed cloth with G-Flex. Is this a good idea? If I use it should it be thickened? I really just want to make it usable for now. When I get more time I may grind the old patches off the stems...

    First Time Major Repair

With my Coleman I just use the metal center thwart as a yoke if I'm feeling tough; if I'm not I cover it with a pool noodle.

    First Time Major Repair

Welcome. Your canoe is a Coleman. The material is polyethylene. They can be a challenge to repair as not much sticks to polyethylene. They can be patched, usually with plastic welding. You can find videos online. I would not spend much money on this canoe. Fix it on the cheap and save for a...

Twig Stoves: Experiences, Opinions and Pictures

I recently built a gassifier stove. I used a helium tank with a bain marie pot. Not sure if it will go on any trips. It is just an experiment. It seems to work.
