How Do You Do Your Dishes?

For our trips (just 2 people) we spend very little time doing, or concerning ourselves, with dishes and seldom use any soap however do bring a couple squirts of camp soap just in case one of the meals has more oil than expected as cooking oil seems to be the only dishwashing concern. Dishes...

10 Day Voyage With a Fiberglass Canoe...1994 MR Sunrunner

DIY ROOF RACK ON ASTRO VAN: (having trouble attaching link to earlier post/details but search for "Astro Van Canoe Rack" if interested) No issues in 754 miles. Opted not to install gunwale stops however brought along clamps just in case. We drove through some wind and turbulent blasts when...

10 Day Voyage With a Fiberglass Canoe...1994 MR Sunrunner

HULL FLOOR PAINT REVIEW: Mistakenly mentioned earlier this paint was purchased at Menards but instead it came from Mills Fleet Farm. Made by Van Sickle Paint Mfg. Co. In my opinion it held up superb which I did not expect. Nice matte finish to reduce glare, goes on easy, cheap etc. etc. The only...

10 Day Voyage With a Fiberglass Canoe...1994 MR Sunrunner

PADDLING EFFICIENCY vs PORTAGING INEFFICIENCY...(the question at the heart of this trip): Q: Should I keep traveling with a fiberglass boat (~70 lbs) or get something Kevlar. The big question in my head..."With the boat being heavy (anticipated slower portaging) can we make up that lost time in...

10 Day Voyage With a Fiberglass Canoe...1994 MR Sunrunner

TWISTY WATER HANDLING: We paddled a number of small creeks however no rivers and for the most part no rapids as we are not much into that sort of thing. Definitely not set up for it and Quetico doesn't offer much. I was quite conscious of how the Sunrunner performed compared to prior voyages in...

10 Day Voyage With a Fiberglass Canoe...1994 MR Sunrunner

Thanks Gumpus. Gorilla tape is the "heartiest" & thickest, stickiest tape I have come across. I began using it a couple years ago at my job where I had taped down the edges of a number of carpet runners in a school. Two years of foot traffic along with all the dirt and grime that goes with it...

10 Day Voyage With a Fiberglass Canoe...1994 MR Sunrunner

Handling Ive read about how the MR shallow V hulls are (supposedly) slightly twitchy with marginal primary stability. I'm no pro but I say...baaaaaah. I took out a very tall first-timer for a couple test floats (with gear and without) and we rocked it as far as seemed reasonable and neither of...

10 Day Voyage With a Fiberglass Canoe...1994 MR Sunrunner

Thanks all for the interest, comments and suggestions thus far. I will share more this weekend. Also should comment on my new CCS food pack. It is so freag'n comfortable I'm trying to talk my wife into selling our refrigerator. Maybe then we can get two...more...possibly one in orange...

Gorilla Tape Skid Plates: Photos showing both installation and following 100 mile trip of rocks, creeks, 8 beaver dams, & portages. Granted we wet-foot every landing and pay close attention however I am still amazed at how well it performed and stuck firm with the bow strip just barely beginning...

10 Day Voyage With a Fiberglass Canoe...1994 MR Sunrunner

100 Miles & 37 Portages I'll soon add more detail to this post for those that have graciously expressed interest in this old oddball (1994 MR Sunrunner). In short, the secret(s) to the success of this trip was a strong, 6'-5" farm boy and me being one heck of a camp cook to keep him/us fueled &...

Mad River Gelcoat (gel coat) Repair/Questions

Thanks Mike. Good point on the fade variable. The novelty of having a "show-boat" has finally wore off so now focussed on function. Thus I will pick something close and go for it. Unless... Just found a MR Minstrel for sale near me for $175. The FG version is heavy but if it happens to be one...

Mad River Gelcoat (gel coat) Repair/Questions

RAL numbers anyone?? Finally back to this and committed to doing the gel coat repair as the way-to-much-deliberated maiden voyage (10 days in Quetico) of this old boat is on for August! My son can't go this round...freag'n jobs...but found a porteaur 10+ years my junior who stands 6' 4" and...

Astro Van Canoe Rack Ideas Anyone??

Thanks Mike. With the way my entire set-up ended up, the rack mounting holes (in-line with the raised roof corrugations) just so happens to be exactly where the gunnels sit (or at least drag across) on both the front and back. What are the odds of that?? Therefore when I slide the boat on from...

Astro Van Canoe Rack Ideas Anyone??

Thanks Gumpus, the poly tube is just the solution I was looking for! Have some in the shop so costs me zip. Now any gunwale stop solution will work. P.S...I've had my van out in the recent monsoons with the racks on and mounting holes plugged with plumbers putty. A couple days of solid sunshine...

Astro Van Canoe Rack Ideas Anyone??

Hello gumpus & thanks. Somehow missed your post yesterday. Dowels may be the answer. Currently I am using short sections of the profiled gunwale pads in the 4 places where the boat comes into contact with the crossbars. Since they are an inch or so thick at the sides, the gunwales would be that...

Astro Van Canoe Rack Ideas Anyone??

Thanks for the Thule suggestions. At first thought the Artificial Gutter seemed like a perfect solution but without going out and looking I'm not certain it would work on the sliding door side of the van. Would definitely feel better about holes in the sides aside from on top as they are now.
