    Ronco Pocket Fisherman

I say "Ron Popeil, maybe the greatest pitchman of all time". You can get one "new in box" on eBay for about $50. I bought a knock off in the 80's, it was total junk but I did catch a modest pike with it. I still have it in a tote of dead camping stuff....somewhere? I'm skeptical the...

    Strength training for canoeing

Years ago when my mother was living in an off grid cabin I did a reasonable amount of time doing firewood gathering and processing which was good enough to prep for paddling season. She is no longer around and while I visit the cabin for some overnights it's mostly in the Summer so I have relied...

    Ausable River camping rules.

Have you had a look at climbing webbing or slings? Some come in Polyester but even the Nylon ones are relatively low stretch.

Portage Pack Liner vs. Dry Bags in Portage Pack

You should have a look at these Sil-Nylon dry bags. They occupy much less space and are very light weight. https://seatosummit.com/en-ca/products/ultra-sil-dry-bag? An alternative would be the much more common and cheaper Sil-Nylon stuff sacks and seal the seams yourself. I wouldn't do that...

    Life jacket suggestions

I tend to agree although I think a pfd specifically cut for paddling is worth spending a little bit more. Decades ago after I dumped my cheapo piece of junk I bought a Lotus which was quite nice until I lost it on a trip. For many years I used a Patagonia pfd, yeah I know not exactly know for...

    Kevin Wild's 42 day, 650 K, Labrador Solo Journey

You swim and or run after it as far and as fast as you can all the while "dreaming" that you will see it beached around the next corner in the eddy behind the giant boulder. FYI - Capsizing is not the only way to have your canoe get away from you.....

Trouble Closing a Seal Line Map Case

Have a look at Aquapac. I bought one in 2008 and have never wanted to go back to any of other options. https://aquapac.ca/products/large-waterproof-shoulder-case

    Happens every year

Here in Southern Ontario groundhogs were as common as dirt when I was growing up in the 50' 60's 70's, I have not seen one in at least 30 years, apparently the coyotes find them very tasty. Interestingly while there have always been squirrels the numbers have gone crazy in the last 10 - 20...

Trouble Closing a Seal Line Map Case

Maybe a silicone lubricant would help. Is the trouble indoor or outside? Those heavy duty zip-locks can be annoying when it's cold.

Do Canoes Distract from Drug Side Effects?

Do Canoes Distract from Drug Side Effects? In my experience they (drugs) enhance rather than distract........... FYI - In the past couple of years there have been a number of pharmaceutical ad campaigns that feature canoes, sometimes even with SOLO canoes.

    Recped’s chicken

I have personal experience with the use of Sodium phosphate for this purpose having used it for at least 15 colonoscopies over the past 27 years. To achieve the desired results one would probably need to consume a minimum of a dozen Costco chickens in ONE SITTING. As you know there is no way I...

Hogging and interior cracks in OT Discovery 169

I have that type of interior cracking in both my Mohawk XL14's, the one where it is the worst has a small bit of hogging. For the cracks I used thickened Gflex and then covered with pieces of s-glass. Some would recommend turning the cracks into a v-shape, all I did was give a twirl of a knife...

Difference between NRS and NRS Outdoor Safety?

I was just doing some window shopping at NRS and came across this page: https://www.nrs.com/learn/how-to-detect-fraudulent-nrs-website-store? It must be a significant problem if they are posting public warning pages.

The 2034 Winter Olympics will be in Salt Lake City, if Lake Placid made a bid for another winter games it would probably be for 2046 or later.

Old Town Penobscot Royalex restoration. Is this hull salvageable?

I'm with the crowd, when the weather improves give it a good cleaning and then new pics with more detail of anything the cleaning reveals. The outside storage could mean serious problems but it appear the vinyl outer layer is still intact which means the Royalex itself may have survived the UV...

    T-Satellite

Depends on the GPS unit. My old Garmin (GPSmap78s) is good for 8 - 10 days on a pair of Lithium AA's. A few years ago I picked up a Montana version with touch screen and internal battery, super heavy and needed recharging every day or two. When you go....go BIG (and live stream your trip)...

    Videographer/Drone Pilot Wanted

If you are considering a Canadian based videographer it would probably be more attractive if the pickup was on the Canadian side of the border especially if they were bring any substantial amount of gear. There are a lot of skilled video people with paddling experience here in Canada.

    Mutating Ticks

Perhaps this will make you feel better. While there has been a significant increase in blacklegged ticks in the immediate area around Thunder Bay, Wabakimi is still considered low risk for Lyme Disease. In another 10 years that may change and one would need to go further north to avoid them...
