    What the Shell?

I have a NRS Riptide jacket - great for paddling in the rain and cold on top of a wetsuit. Oppressive if its not cold and raining. Carhart Storm Defender for working in the rain around the harbor. But for real durable, water proof, hard wearing gear, there's nothing like Grunden's.

    Canoeing Plans for 2026?

You're not allowed on the Megiscane again, anyway, until you finish last summer's trip report! : )

    Food handling while tripping

We don't eat fish on our trips often, but when we do, it tends to be an intentional decision once we've made camp - as in, "let's see if we can catch something for dinner." Since we are the crew that also likes their cocktails cold, on occasion, caught fish have ended up in ziplocs in the cooler...

    Burning plastic

I’m with Memaquay. Perspective is important. For a couple week trip to Quebec, what’s my environmental footprint? Just the 100 gallons of gas that it takes to get me there and back… then there’s the train, the coffee that’s coming from Indonesia, all the gear that’s made in Asia or Europe… I can...

We met Jean and the girlfriend this spring. Nice folks. They gave us and our gear a lift from the sign where you tented (and where the train dropped us) to their put-in. Interested to hear how the rest of your journey unfolded.

Successful journey & great TR. I’d like to challenge any future paddler who tries to recreate this trip to see if they can make a CostCo chicken last longer….

    Overcoming Fear of Whitewater

St Croix is a bunch of fun - quick trip, good fishing, plenty of camps, low-consequence little rapids. St John was a bit dull - pretty, remote, much longer - but, ultimately, dull. Two rapids on the whole 7-8 day trip. Happy to provide details if interested.

    Overcoming Fear of Whitewater

Was never afraid of ww. A little nervousness long, long ago. No lessons. Mostly bulled my way through, and learned from other paddlers while I was doing it. Swam a lot in a XL12 in WV spring run-off rivers. First nasty washing machine experience makes you listen closer to what the old guys...

    Floatation Bags

Though you've heard otherwise, size does matter. Recped's XL14 is packed pretty tight with his tripping gear. My Moisie has quite a bit more room. And despite trying to fill the void with bags of booze, coolers of meat, croquet sets, and the bug hut, I still have space for an end air bag fore...

    Maine, 1820 trip

I’ve got the willing friends - maybe I can convince the State we need to recreate the journey….

    Maine, 1820 trip

As a historian, I occasionally have the rare luck of combining work with pleasure - today I was able to take the time to go down a 200-year old paddling rabbit hole. It seems that in 1820, after becoming a state, Maine charged Major Joseph Treat to help with surveying the "wilderness." Led by...

    Favo(u)rite Pastries While Wilderness Canoeing

Strong dark maduro cigars & scotch. Lots of scotch. And gin. And often rum. I like to sip my dessert.

Ok, so we all know the Toronto bluebirds are playing in the special baseball series or whatever it is - and between the silly games and your addiction to the Circus (which I recognize is a terribly disturbing and distracting clown show at the moment) I understand that your attention is...

It's certainly an acquired taste. Luckily, my mentors instilled the crack-of-noon paddling discipline into me in my formative years, so Recped and I jived at first blush. Been duck-soup since...
