    Where have we all paddled?

Let's see... With open boats in the USA: South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, Minnessota. With a decked C1 (yes, I do consider it a canoe) add Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. In Canada: Ontario and Nova Scotia. It's a funny thing, but in all those places the...

    Old Town "Northern Light 15"

I Lucked Out on this one.:) Right now I am waiting for repair materials to come in; seat caning supplies, slow hardener (might be working in 90 degree temps) and pigments for the resin. I'll be posting photos as the Northern Light progresses.

    Old Town "Northern Light 15"

I did not know about the hull number and the HIN being different on Old Town canoes due to the digit allocation. If I had thought about how many canoes Old Town has produced in it's long history I might have figured that out. Now I know. The knowledge and the willingness to share it is one...

    Old Town "Northern Light 15"

Thanks Benson, I was curious about the 390212 SN so I just checked the hull stamp. Between the XTC and the 90212 there in no "3" in evidence. I am not greatly familiar with the Old Town numbering system: would the "3" be an unstamped factory number or and error in stamping? Thank you again...

I finally found my camera, so here are some photos before I muck with it.

    Old Town "Northern Light 15"

Thanks Alan, I missed that one. It looks a good bit rougher than mine. And a thanks to you Benson. I had wondered when the Northern Light was introduced. From postings I gather that it was last produced in 1994; not a very long run. This one has the HIN of XTC902121192. I have not...

    Old Town "Northern Light 15"

I picked up a new project this weekend. I was perusing the ads on FB Marketplace and ran into this one: Canoe - Old Town single seat w/Paddle $200 Approximately 15’ long single seat fiberglass canoe. It has some light scratches from use, storage and transport. Light enough for 1person to...

    Life jacket suggestions

There are many good PFDs out there and designs vary from lightweight non-restrictive PFDs to high-flotation models designed for swift water rescue. I own three different models and will vary my choice based on the type of water that I am paddling, be it a lake, moving water or whitewater...

Pumping air under ice to prevent fish kill

It's funny that the fish managed to survive all those years before modern civilization came to their rescue.

    Obsolete Stuff

The question should be: "If an item still works and is useful, is it truly obsolete?" I still carry a compass even when I have a GPS with me. I don't consider the compass obsolete, but perhaps superseded; I know the compass will not run out of power.

    Wateree or Broad River, SC

I've paddled a bit of the upper Broad down to just above the Ninety-nine Islands Dam area, which I really should explore more, and it is not terribly scenic. The river is mostly fairly shallow fast moving water with just enough riffles and rocky shoals to keep things interesting. Downstream...

So, what old item do you still use?

Today I wore my North Face Down Jacket that I received as a Christmas present in 1971. My mother bought a size Large when a Medium would have fit loosely. She figured that I would grow into it, and she was right, plus our small-town hiking shop had sold the Medium that I had lusted after. As...

Late Jan. 2026: Snow where you are?

I hope we get some real snow soon. The "storm" dropped enough snow to make the ground white (1/8 to1/4"?) followed by sleet and freezing rain, leaving 3/4" to 1" of slick ice on the hill of my driveway. I went out and broke a couple of lanes open with a mattock, waited for a day until the...

Savage River to start producing Monarch hulls

If you would like to see what it was designed for, look up "Verlen Kruger" and his paddling over 100,000 miles in his lifetime even though he did not start paddling until he was 41 years old! That is some awesome milage, some incredible trips and why he designed the canoe.

Savage River to start producing Monarch hulls

Maybe they should call it a "Kruger Monarch" or "Savage River Monarch" to differentiate it from the "GRB Monarch" . How many Monarchs can one follow? I had a Mad River Monarch. Wonderful boat, I just didn't paddle enough big water trips to justify keeping it.

    Millbrook Boats up for Sale?

I just found this posted on "Paddlers of Millbrook Boats" Facebook page and thought that I would share the info. Anyone interested in making high quality composite whitewater boats out there? Lets hope that some talented individual picks up the line and continues these fine canoes and kayaks...

    Canoeing Plans for 2026?

What are your canoeing plans for 2026? A new canoe, a big trip, introducing someone new to paddling or just enjoying local waters more? I still have not decided on my yearly "big trip" yet, possibly another trip to the WPSCR in Pennsylvania and then on to the Adirondacks, or if the dates work...
