    What the Shell?

I carry three shells. If I know it's going to be a rainy day, I wear an Arc'teryx Beta SL rain jacket under my PFD, which I normally keep packed away in my clothes pack. In my accessible grab bag, I have a Black Diamond Stormline rain shell in a size larger than I usually wear that fits over...

Bugs in Tent: How to keep them out, kill, or tolerate them?

I use a handheld Thermacell that has no battery. When the bugs are thick, I warm it up and slip it in my tent for 15 minutes or so before I get in. It seems to prevent the bugs from entering the tent until I can get the mosquito netting zipped up. Works well for me.

I think there was more water in 1981 when my brother and I did the trip. This is "the tight squeeze", which I believe is your last photo. I am in the stern.

Your three favorite pieces of comfort or luxury canoe camping gear

I'll play. On the cusp of 70, I don't consider a folding chair a luxury item. I have tried a bunch including multiple Helinox and I agree with the Helinox Chair One in its latest incarnation. Good paddling shoes, a high quality tent and good sleeping pad are necessities for me. Luxuries...

2025 Western Pennsylvania Solo Canoe Rendezvous

If these look interesting, they ARE vegan and I'll have them there Friday night. Chocolate dipped peanut butter cookies.

2025 Western Pennsylvania Solo Canoe Rendezvous

I will be bringing my Swift Dragonfly 15 for others to try. Friday night is a vegetarian pot luck and I will be cooking up quesadillas and balsamic roasted Brussel sprouts. Saturday morning I'll be making vegan, gluten free pancakes.

The New Swift/DY Redesign of the Dragonfly

I've just finished paddling my new Swift Dragonfly 15 for a couple of days in the New Jersey Pine Barrens with some friends, so I can finally relate my initial impressions of this canoe. First, let me say that it's all positive. This is a very fun canoe to paddle. Coupled with being a truly...

The New Swift/DY Redesign of the Dragonfly

Yes. I'll take some more pictures. I will take it on the Big Salmon River this summer. I plan to use it as intended. We shall see how the new epoxy UV shield holds up.

spray cover without snaps or velcro

I can't say. I suspect that if one were to take the plastic snap base, rough it up with 80 grit sand paper and anneal it with a torch, that the 3M adhesive pad would stay put. That is not a very practical solution except for the truly obsessed.

spray cover without snaps or velcro

The failure is actually taking place between the adhesive pad and the plastic snap base. It leaves the adhesive pad on the canoe. They are the YKK SNAD's. YKK's response to the issue was that the marine snaps were not meant to get wet.

The New Swift/DY Redesign of the Dragonfly

They referred to it as the Dragonfly XL initially. I lobbied for SuperFly. It would have a theme song and everything. Seriously though, I think of it as more of a larger, drier and more responsive Phoenix. Robert

The New Swift/DY Redesign of the Dragonfly

Yes, my plan is to take the DF15. We have a tentative group at this point, which is not completely set. Part of the canoe equation will be renting vs. bringing for those flying vs driving. Let me get the okay to spill the beans before I do. I am pretty focused on a 10 day Everglades trip...

The New Swift/DY Redesign of the Dragonfly

Thank you! We did 700 miles on the Yukon last summer and as we were passing the mouth of the Big Salmon, NikonF5user (Russ) commented that he always wanted to do the Big Salmon. So here we go!

The New Swift/DY Redesign of the Dragonfly

At this point, it looks like we may have the new Swift Dragonfly 15, Hemlock SRT and Redfeather Rockstar all on a Big Salmon River trip in Yukon Territory next summer.

The New Swift/DY Redesign of the Dragonfly

I have never paddled the original Dragonfly, but I spent a day paddling the plug for the Dragonfly 15 and I own a Phoenix in IXP. I found the stern of the DF15 to break free in a similar fashion to the Phoenix. Not what I would call sticky. The DF15 feels much more lively and responsive than...
