Now that’s a fancy bridge. Hahaha. Was it a rope bridge?

The Spork, Do you use one?

I have a long handled titanium spork that I bought for backpacking 10 years ago. It’s perfect for those deep bagged store bought dehydrated meals. I’ve used it on every camping trip I’ve been on since I bought it. I don’t regret the purchase. I also have two or three more steel sporks that I...

A Short Overnight in the St. Regis Area

Awesome @ReluctantFarmer! It looks like you had a great trip! You may have convinced me to head that way next weekend and attempt that section from ochre to fish. I’ll have my little brother with me and the weather is supposed to be cooler. A half days work opening that section up might be in...

How to recruit new canoe paddlers?

Sounds like we should have a rendezvous in your area every few years to clear portages…

    CanoeTripping.net real life rendezvous?

This sounds like a good idea to me, but I’m biased because I live in the Adirondacks.

    Whitewater options in the Adirondacks?

I did a cursory search of the whitewater forum and came up empty for threads involving whitewater paddling in the Adirondacks. I have Dave Cilley's "Adirondack Paddler's Guide", but he doesn't spend a lot of time discussing moving water options. I know sections of the St. Regis River have...

Overnight Trips in ADK This Week?

@Patrick Corry, Have you ever been able to float the section between Ochre and Fish Pond?

Overnight Trips in ADK This Week?

Yesterday I did a shuttle trip with the family from Little Clear pond, stopped at the big Island on St. Regis Pond for lunch, and then continued through Green Pond (passed a couple who had caught a splake there), Little Long Pond, Bear Pond, Bog Pond, and finished up at the launch on Upper St...

    Winter conversation

I’ve read a few articles recently about the potential return of the Olympics to Lake Placid. My understanding is that only specialized events such as those held at Mt. Van Hoevenberg and Whiteface would occur in the immediate area. The remainder of the games would be held elsewhere with NYC...

    New Record

I drove state route 3 from Harrisville to Saranac Lake on Sunday. Cranberry Lake was wide open as far as I could see when I passed through. Piercefield flow was also open. First and second pond on the Saranac River were open, Lower Saranac lake still had ice on the main lake, and Lake Flower in...

    Boreas Ponds, Adirondacks, NY

I am very interested in all of these options. I moved to Saranac Lake last summer and these areas are on my list to explore.

Late Jan. 2026: Snow where you are?

I think we got somewhere between 12-14 inches in Saranac Lake, NY. Fluffy, powdery, snow. That’s on top of almost 2 feet I already had in the yard. I invested in a snow blower this year and have used it quite a bit.

    Mutating Ticks

I don’t think I saw a tick all summer/fall in the Adirondacks, and we hiked and went on plenty of day trips in the canoe with portages. The dog was along most of the time, and I never pulled a tick off her. In SW Pennsylvania where I used to live, we would all pick up ticks just playing in the...

    Burning plastic

I think it’s hard to come to an immediate conclusion on the best way to handle disposable plastics like the kind found in food wrappers and packaging. If you burn a small plastic wrapper in your campfire, there is an immediate hazard from the toxins released when the plastic breaks down. Some...

    Travel Fishing Rod and Case?

I don’t think it’s likely you’ll find a rod tube/case that’s small enough to pack in a duffel that can also accommodate a reel. There are a lot of good travel rods out there from reputable brands. A lot of them come with soft sided travel cases. After I rig a rod up on a canoe trip, I never...

    Sadie's Bloodvein Trip Report

I believe the only thing required is proof of a recent rabies vaccination. We brought our dog to Canada in 2024, and that’s all we had with us. No questions asked.
