After 88 years, this burn-pile old canoe is getting a makeover!

Sadly Pat when I took the bow set out (it’s a sailing canoe with the whole rig and the bow seat is the mast partner) I think I broke three of the bolts. New diamond bolts can be had from Rollin Thurlow at North Woods Canoe Shop. Jim

After 88 years, this burn-pile old canoe is getting a makeover!

Nice job Pat. I’ve got one for the burn pile I tried to save but it has too much active galvanic corrosion going on that I just couldn’t stop. It’s free if anyone wants it. Jim

The Spork, Do you use one?

As others have said I use a spoon and I always have a knife with me. I might have been given a spork, I think it might be in the car, I’ve never used it. As a spoon it is too shallow and as a fork the tines are too short and dull I believe it is from MSR so the only useful features are the...

    Pushing the Penobscot

Nice run. I saw some pics of a couple of river races here in Maine with a lot of capsizes. I see a number on your hull were you in any of the races? Jim

    National Boy Scouts Day

Scouting didn’t hold me either, now sixty odd years or so later I don’t really know why. I can only guess the troop didn’t do enough outings or I didn’t click with them who knows. What did change my life was the new youth director at the local YMCA. I was in high school and he started an...

    Thin Strip Jig

That’s true if that is the way you are going to cut them, multiple boards then move the fence. Jim

    Thin Strip Jig

The boards don’t need to be the same width to begin with but they do need parallel edges. I’ve used homemade versions and they work well. Never saw one with a locking wheel if it tries to back up, that is a nice feature. Jim Jim

A friend of mine had a car like that, he called it his “station car” as he would leave it at the train station for extended periods. It never got molested, at least that he could tell. Jim

    Alan's Bloodvein II

I’ll have to remember that setup. I’m guessing the strong back I’d the heaviest so it will alway want to rotated with the canoe upright. Jim

    Bird Management

A neighbor put a couple of rubber snakes in strategic locations, they will not be back till after nest building has begun so I’ll let you know if they work. Jim

    Alan's Bloodvein II

Two things come to my mind. Humidity changes is the first, I tried to build a strip boat from basswood and I never got it glassed it was always moving around. Quarter sawn wood helps minimize the dimensional changes. The other thought is once the staples were removed some of the stresses were...

I used to have one of these pullers that came with an Arrow stapler. It is the best puller I’ve ever used. Apparently someone else like it too and felt they deserved it more than me. I might just have to make one. It’s hard to see in this pic but it has a spring steel leaf to hold the pulled...

outfitting ~ Old Town Discovery ~

Well done Kahel. A lot of people are intimidated by eye splices in general and in braided line in particular. Are you going to put a whipping at the top of the eye? I think that makes a nice finishing touch. Looks like a nice marline spike knife, who makes it? I’ve had a Buck Yachtsman’s knife...
