    site member activity

I was part of a forum for automotive professionals about 25 years ago and they had a similar forum. The 'open' forum was eventually shut down because, despite having nothing to do with the intent of the site, it by far created the most hard feelings between members and caused the most work and...

How to recruit new canoe paddlers?

I've never had any luck converting a kayaker to canoeing. I assume they think I'm just as nuts as I think they are. Oh well. I think most of them are just out there to be on the water and don't have a real desire to learn to paddle a canoe with a single blade, even if they do struggle in their...

    Alan's Bloodvein II

I've never seen that to be the case. Usually, since the filler is being scraped back off aggressively with a flexible squeegee, it doesn't really fill those low spots in anyway. If you were using it as a fairing compound then, yes, it might look a little funny where it filled in those low spots...

    Alan's Bloodvein II

Looking great. Can't wait to see it glassed. I use thickened epoxy to fill any gaps, usually after the 2nd pass of rough sanding. I used to spot fill the gaps but the last couple times I just started putting a skim coat to the entire hull (doesn't take much time or epoxy). I use a squeegee to...

    Seen This Type of Canoe?

Skin on frame. Likely home built. Much more common construction method for kayaks than canoes. I believe a couple of our members use them almost exclusively and maybe even posted a build thread. The skin is, I believe, usually dacron. Alan

Safest places to canoe in the USA after a nuclear war

No real shenanigans, just another attempted Ai invasion. I get a kick out of how they give such literal answers. Alan

Things to keep in mind on a test paddle

Your experience paddling a solo canoe is similar to what most of us experienced when starting out. You can read and read until you're blue in the face trying to figure out what's the perfect hull for you but until you spend a lot of hours in a solo and gain quite a bit of experience it's really...

Things to keep in mind on a test paddle

I'm not sure if Starlight is the same as the KevLight layup of the olden days but I had a Kevlight Bell Magic back in the day and put on thousands of lake and river miles. Hit a lot of things and drug over plenty of logs, rocks, and gravel bars. It got plenty of scratches and the gel coat was...

    Alan's Bloodvein II

I've never had a problem sanding or glassing it when everything is upside down. The knuckle area is flat so that makes it pretty easy to sand. I realize you're using wood that's harder than cedar so it might be more work. Round over the outside corner and add a small filet to the inside corner...

    bell wildfire

I'm your height and weight and while the wildfire was a fun boat to paddle on occasion, just for something different, it definitely was not my main choice for iowa paddling, which involves mainly small lakes, wind, and rivers with virtually no rapids above a riffle. The maneuverability of...

Poll: How old are you - 2026 version

This old thread popped up from 10 years ago and it made me wonder how the answers of 2026 compare to the answers of 2016. https://www.canoetripping.net/threads/poll-how-old-are-you.52670/

    Best all-around design?

@Gamma1214 is currently building the best ever all purpose hull designed for a mix of lakes and rivers. If anyone wants to refute that they can build one to test it out. ;) https://www.canoetripping.net/threads/alans-bloodvein-ii.130662/

How not to paddle a war canoe, or . . .

I can see where it could be disastrous if a paddler was slow to slide their seat. As other paddlers slide to your side the canoe would start to heal, making it easier/ faster for them to move into final position and almost impossible for you to overcome gravity and shift to the other side to...

How not to paddle a war canoe, or . . .

That would be tricky trying to slide seats in synch at the hut. Alan
