    Alan's Bloodvein II

I'm up for trying new things... might try that on the next one. The only thing I'd bet I WON'T be doing is like I did on my Freedom (1st strip right at the chine, 2nd along the sheer and tapered every strip between the two)

    Alan's Bloodvein II

Sure was. I'm still a little freaked out by it and I can now see why you throw a filet inside in that area. Honestly, I was going to round them off hard but the bow is pretty high, the chine runs out pretty far and I'm wondering if that was part of the problem I ran into on the Merlin. I...

    Alan's Bloodvein II

Didn't work exactly as planned but I'm getting there. I normally carry the bandsaw to the porch but weather (rain changing to snow) chased me inside. I blocked off the heat to the shop (keeps the sawdust upstairs) and proceeded to cut out the forms (I also cut out a paddle blank if you're...

    Hello from Southern NH

Welcome. I have yet to drive that direction so trip reports are greatly appreciated.

New Swift Prospector 15 Solo - Specs?

I don't know if you're planning to attend WPSCR in Butler this year, but I could easily drag the Raven over so you could toss it & your gear in their pond.

Your three favorite pieces of comfort or luxury canoe camping gear

Welcome Mike. That certainly looks comfy but I'd hate to portage it.

Pumping air under ice to prevent fish kill

I've never seen anything like that on the lakes here but I've built several Koi ponds for people and always recommend a floating de-icer in the winter. In small ponds like that, the issue is ammonia (from rotting debris & fish waste) trapped under the ice and building up to toxic levels. The...

New Swift Prospector 15 Solo - Specs?

That was my first thought: I haven't taken actual measurements but it sounds like the Raven I built last year... Any interest in @Tryin' a stripper build?

    Alan's Bloodvein II

I spent quite a bit of time upstairs in the boat shop today. I got the strips done but I'll need to modify the set-up for the next boat. Like the Tamarack and Cherry, the Tulip Poplar was prone to tearing out where the strip was really wide (thick part of the donor board) or if the grain...

    Kevin Wild's 42 day, 650 K, Labrador Solo Journey

Makes me recall this thread (or maybe this one) as losing, or destroying, the boat may be my biggest fear. I liked that he was clear about moving gear only short distances at a time so as to keep it all within sight. It really would be easy to get separated from something in some of those areas.

I think that's termed "playful" in the sales brochure. :)

WTB: MR Duck Hunter, Malecite, or Indy

If you can't find it locally, there are 2 of them listed on Facebook in the Pittsburgh area One is an Explorer Duck Hunter Edition and the other is a little older listing.

    Installed Footbrace on P15

Is the bar telescoping or are the holes in the bar slotted to allow for the width difference of the hull as the bar is moved forward or backward?

    Kevin Wild's 42 day, 650 K, Labrador Solo Journey

I'm about 1/2 way. Editing this had to be a brutal task... I wonder how many times Kevin had to watch it before publishing?

    New Swift Cirrus 14.6

That's a very pretty boat. If it were mine, I might have to let someone else paddle it until the first scratch.

That looks really good. Nicely done.

    Alan's Bloodvein II

My architect friend indulged me once more and plans are now actual size. I've switched away from Walnut in favor of Sassafras for the accent strips & trim because the Walnut I had wasn't very nice, I had a wide Sassafras board that was a bit too warped to make paddles and the width of this hull...

Is that a dam in the 4th pic? If so, were you above or below it?

Questions and requests for advice as I'm starting out

Of the woods that you've listed as available to you, I'd use the Cherry. It ages into a deep, dark red and, in my experience, darker woods like Walnut tend to lighten with age while lighter woods tend to darken. Cherry is a little fragile when working it- it will split easily if bent too...

    Kite +6%

Good grief! Prefacing that with "measure twice, cut once", I was expecting to read that you'd forgotten that advice and cut it too short (I did that on my Raven). Glad you're smarter than that.
