My hammock is under there. I like having the extra fly space to cook/ work and this was also my mobile office for a few years.

    Vintage Shaw and Tenney Paddles

Welcome! I have a very similar standing paddle from Shaw and Tenney it was great fun in my old Dagger that I used for standing paddling and poling back in the 90s. It is a fun way to paddle and fish in the right canoe. I got it out and used it in my Minette the other day. I had a nice swim...

Videos: Canadian Style and Freestyle Paddling in Wood Canoes

I got the moose part down while working on Isle Royale for a few summers. The walleye part never happened.

    Peterborough Minetta

Thanks. What a great commute to work Pook! Enjoy your trip in that Pal. When I do the recanvas and repairs I would like to replace the 75th Anniversary decal. Does anyone know of a source?

    Peterborough Minetta

Thank you! Yours looks beautiful. I thought this was a Chestnut Chum when I bought it. After cleaning it up a bit I saw the shadow of the Peterborough 75th anniversary decal, and the 1815 stamped into the stem. Curing speed is nice, but durability and weight (and cost) are worth more to me, so...

    Peterborough Minetta

The Bow seat is split so that came out. The center thwart didn’t seem to be original so that is out, and I carved a carrying yoke to replace it. A new thwart was hung at both seat locations to help it maintain its shape and stiffness. I paddle kneeling for the most part and can sit on a bag to...

    Peterborough Minetta

I recently acquired a Peterborough Minetta. Some scraps of cloth and contact cement. A bit of paint and some screws and she is floating. I’m preparing to order some canvas and some wood to replace a few ribs and a little planking, but for the most part it’s in really nice shape so should not...

    The ice hook

I have a shepherd’s hook that works well for that and grabbing branches and as a seated pole for pushing on the bottom. It probably wouldn’t work well on ice though.

    The ice hook

Now that I have returned to the north I’ll have to keep my eyes open for an ice hook. I remember some dicey moments crossing ice when my pole or paddle slipped and things moved a bit too quickly. I’m to slow for that now, but a controlled pull sounds good.

    Sylvania

Thanks for the report. Sounds like the canoeing and camping were less than ideal, but the panfishing sounded like it was fun. It’s been a while since I had a day where I got tired of catching.

Can you side sleep in a hammock?

The hammock is worth a try. It’s wonderful for my bad back, and it’s easy to set up and lightweight. It takes a lot for me to get comfortable on the ground or in bed. I did one Isle Royale trip with a tent. Maybe 10 more weeks there with the hammock and years up and down the east coast working...

Can you side sleep in a hammock?

Hennessy hammock is fine for side sleeping. I’m not sure stomach sleeping would be possible.

    Camping with no tent, hammock

I’m going to have to look into that! Having the comfort of a hammock and some warmth would be nice. I’ve been a hammock camper since the mid 90s whenever the weather allowed. Summers in Michigan, year round in Florida and whenever it was warm enough for bugs in between. Some years I spent more...

    Two rescues in one day

When I was in Florida we saw people illegally trapping large numbers of turtles for sale. A call to the FWC can help. For a couple of years I was working with amphibians and reptiles in the western marsh of Lake Okeechobee for work. Legitimate live traps will be flagged and marked with the...
