    New Swift Cirrus 14.6

Savage River offers light Textreme in various colors. It is a lighter fabric than regular Textreme and the fibers are dyed to get the colors. For both of those reasons, Savage River recommends an outer skin of S-glass. As a result, this layup is very expensive and may be a pound heavier than a...

Tractor Seat + nylon pants = PIA

I've never had Chip's issue on my Hemlock SRT tractor seat, but I began having tailbone pain when driving long distances in my car. A cushion with a tailbone cutout solved the problem.

Thanks for the pictures. I love cypress and tupelo swamps.

Request for Insight on the Owyhee River, Oregon

Steve, as of today, the entire Grand Ronde watershed seems to be in the red (~drought) area of your snow water equivalent link. Are you prepared to travel 6,000 miles round trip to paddle a bony river? Your bucket hat survived and made it into your avatar!

    New Swift Cirrus 14.6

Very nice looking canoe, Joe. I didn't know a carbon fusion layup could come with a tinted exterior and a basalt-Innegra interior, and at such a low weight. Swift is so cutting edge when it comes to materials and aesthetics.

Opinions on a new boat - Rapidfire, Spitfire 13, Trillium

I believe you would find the Placid Rapidfire and certainly the Spitfire too initially unstable with kneeling seats. @yknpdlr has a Rapidfire with a kneeling seat, so maybe he will chime in. The Spitfire is only 12 foot length overall, not 13. For what you want to paddle, I'd prefer forward...

    Rio Grande, Big Bend.

What are the odds? A member posts pictures of a faraway trip from long ago, and two others post pictures of the very same rapid. Well, considering the canoe-mania affliction, perhaps the odds aren't that long.

    Nor'easter Snow Blast, Feb. 22-23, 2026

Same here. Annoying. I have virtually no place to plow snow with my tractor blade on my 600' driveway, which has snow walls on each side. Jim, what's the dog's breed and name?

So, what old item do you still use?

Sedges, tell what canoes you have. I see at least three wood ones.

Late Season Canoe Poling on the Union River

Really late to this thread, but poling interests me. I regret not being more serious about it when I was younger. Steve, is that a Home Depole?

    What the Shell?

Me too. I tried it for paddling in the early 80s and a couple of times since. It doesn't breathe all that well and eventually loses waterproofness. I prefer a truly waterproof fabric with lots of ventilation ports.

    Nor'easter Snow Blast, Feb. 22-23, 2026

Got about 16" here. Rhode Island got bombed with 38". The following article has an interactive chart that can be searched and sorted for different states and locations. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2026/02/24/search-snowstorm-reports-from-noreaster/88835559007/

    Getting in and Getting out

Good demonstration video, Brian. I suppose that could work if one is a kneeler. Get into a sitting position and then, as a second step, wrangle your calves under the seat while you are sitting. But putting one foot in first, holding the gunwales, then sliding the initial foot under the seat...

Posting images in threads (and Rotation Problem Solved)

This is a good question. I had to do some research. Xenforo changed how they handle resizing on the server and client side. As I now understand it: In a previous XF version two years ago, the image would be resized to 950 x 950 (or whatever I set my controls to) on the server side. The...

What's changed for better or worse over your canoeing lifetime?

Thank you, Benson. You remain far superior to AI. It's interesting that the later Royalex "Rockets" were only 5 pounds heavier than the earlier Royalite ones. It's also interesting that the Royalite name was resurrected in the early 1990s for an ABS sandwich hull with the vinyl skin on the...
