Just wanted to share a couple of photos of my kids at work(?). I’m so blessed to have healthy kids who love canoe trips.

Paddling humor: one-liners said to you while paddling

A few years age we Chartered a flight off the Fond du Lac. Wife asks the pilot if there are different sizes of Beavers (she meant Dehavilland). He interpreted the question a little differently. For a second we thought we’d fall out of the sky he was laughing so hard.

    OT: College Hockey, Anyone?

Super pumped for hockey playoffs too, the only thing better is world juniors! Other side of the border here so it’s all about the Dub. The Pats play tonight and its very likely Bedards last game before he goes pro. It’s been amazing being able to go to games and watch him play, he’s unreal good.

How many pairs of footwear: in canoe vs. on portage vs. in camp?

For on the water in cooler temps and higher lats we get the rubbers boots out, good ones with high traction soles. Next pair I’ll probably try the NRS boundary boot. Warm summer weather it’s just a pair of fast drying runners with decent soles and support. In camp it’s a pair of gore Tex...

    Ribs vs. Foam Core Floor

I’d go full foam floor if I had to choose between the two. The full foam floor is a way more comfortable boat for the kids and dog to sit in but I wouldn’t take it anywhere too stressful like a fully loaded rock drag. That said my foam core Clipper Mac has seen a lot of wild rivers with very...

Does anyone have any experience setting up a portable electric fence on rocky/frozen tundra ground? How‘d you do it?

    Epoxy filler for paddle edging

Here’s my results. I ended up using a combination of 406 silica and 407 low density fillers in about a 50/50 mix. Very happy with the results, time will tell how it holds up. 2oz cloth holds it all together for a 26oz paddle.

    Which Esquif?

Go big! 17’ prospecteur all the way. I paddle big boats a lot, 18’ NC prospector and 18’6 McKenzie. When we take the 16’ boats out they feel tiny and uncomfortable.

    Wolves

Ive seen quite a few over the years while paddling on Northern trips. I think they like to hang out beside rivers so they can hunt the young and moulting geese. I’ve camped fairly close to dens on a few occasions, they like the same spots that make good camp sites. One fond memory is when we...

Pros and Cons of Guided Canoe Trips

No way, no how, but I’ve got the gear and the experience. Trips in my neck of the woods run you about 450/500$ per day, 5000$ bucks for a bit less than a 2 week trip. My crew of 5 travel for way less than one person.

I’m nobody’s hero on the portage trail, a 35l sealine is all I do.

External Bullnose router bits for paddle shafts

Hey, I’ve done the round over bit to rough shape and the problem I find is that after you round over the first 1/4 of material the guide bearing doesn‘t have any material to follow (if you are trying to get the full radius of the knife) for the second half, working on the flat axis of the...

External Bullnose router bits for paddle shafts

I’m considering giving one a try to cut down on shaping time and to hopefully get a more consistent shaft diameter through its main section. I’ve found an 1 1/4” bit that I’d use to make an oval shaft about 1 1/4 x 1 1 1/8” for 40$, so it’s a small investment. Has anyone here tried using an...

Vehicle vandalism while in the wilderness

I feel more paranoid in the city than out in the bush. Lots of night shoppers cruising the streets these days. Saskatchewan and Manitoba’s northern communities are pretty rough, so you don’t just park your truck by the dock or put in and paddle away. That said, I try to always store my vehicle...

    Freedom to Roam

As Recped said in Canada we can pretty much paddle wherever we want until the water dries up. The land areas that are not owned by the Crown is where Trespass Acts come into effect. Each province has their own unique acts that are enforced by the police and conservation officers and are in...

    Canoeing in Norway

Hey Thestripper, super neat! A visit to Scandinavia is high on the list. Sweden’s trespass laws would make travel and exploring pretty easy. Are they similar in Norway? What are the main brand of canoes found over there?

Thunder boxes, are they good or bad?

I’ve given up on paddling this part of the Churchill River area because of all the poo and overuse. Its everywhere and I can’t keep the dog out of it. The rest of Saskatchewan, never a problem. Hopefully this project is a success.
