New Issue with my Swift portage yoke

H80 Divinycell, epoxied to build thickness. Epoxied in place, wrapped with carbon fiber. Threaded aluminum insert with flange on back side, so that clamping loads a taken in shear by epoxy, and compression on flange. BTW, gunwales are foam wrapped with carbon/kevlar.

New Issue with my Swift portage yoke

Uhhmmm yeah… I stand by my assessment. I am a design engineer that spent my career in R&D, mostly in advanced technologies for defense and aerospace. There are established design criteria, specifically for adhesive based joints. No need to say more.

New Issue with my Swift portage yoke

I have a similar construction gunwale on the carbon copy Kite that I built. After a couple years of awkward carry thwarts attachment with h over the hull straps, I ultimately modified my gunwales. I think I posted about the mods here, but don’t have time at the moment to dig up the post. I...

    Keep a secret?

In the Adirondacks, there are fragmented areas of "wilderness". Some are popular, some are not. I happen to favor the obscure and intimate waters that are seldom visited, and even less so, paddled. For those willing to put in the effort, there are plenty of hidden gems, and even some linked...

    An extra trippy Merlin.

OK, you guys have waaaay too much creative talent… The trippy looks very unique and cool, and the surfboard? Should be in an art gallery, seriously cool.

spray cover without snaps or velcro

3M makes all sorts of double back adhesives…look at the trim pieces on any modern car, all held on by a 3M adhesive, those parts get wet all the time, suffer wild temperature swings, etc Seems to me those snaps just need a different adhesive

spray cover without snaps or velcro

There's always the option of 3M Dual Lock... BTW, welcome to the forum. Let's see a few more pics of your stripper.

Building a light weight expedition canoe

Seems like you're gonna need two boats! I used to think nothing of carrying my 62 lb stripped comp cruiser and my full pack for miles at a time. These days, I'm looking for every advantage and weight savings I can find. Any of the modern materials will work for your needs, if you want stiff...

    Wood gunwales decisions?

I had built a very lightweight 17 foot tandem stripper back in 1984. In the interest of a light build, I used SYP for the gunwales. I ultimately ignored those gunwales for 25 years, and yes, they did suffer. But, had I treated them with respect, they may have survived another 25 years! Sure, the...

    Favorite camp games?

A card game that works well for 2, 3 or 4 player is Casino. Standard 52 card playing deck. It's a fast paced fun game, a 2 handed game generally takes 20 minutes til a winner is determined. Points are assigned as "tricks" are taken... 3 pts for most cards, if tied, no points awarded 1 pt for...

Good Morning . Idle chat about your morning, your weather, your plans for the day.

KO, just curious, why would you stop downhill skiing? I’ve been alpine skiing for nearly 50 years myself, the last 20 or so with back country skinning mixed in, and hope to continue for another couple decades, if possible. Is it the crowds? The cost? Physical issues? One of my ski buddies...

    An extra trippy Merlin.

I've had strips buckle between forms as you've just experienced. I too, got pretty bent out of shape about it...But, after a small delay of a day or two, those buckled strips (I had way more than you do) relaxed and conformed all on their own. There is a time constant associated with forced...

    Which Canoe For Summer Solo?

I have my carbon copy Kite at 14'6", design load 283 lbs. It's a versatile hull. With me as a welterweight, that leaves plenty of freeboard, my gear is generally less than 35 lbs...

    Training?

I spent too long working in R&D, specifically in the field of applied tribology. You could buy some Emralon dry film lubricant and spray coat the new sheet metal roofing to give you a very low coefficient of friction. Problem solved!

    Training?

Rather than shovel that roof multiple times per season, year after year after year, if it were me, I would alter the pitch of that roof. Thereafter, you would never have to shovel ( or rake) again!! But that is an impressive amount of snow…

Good Morning . Idle chat about your morning, your weather, your plans for the day.

As I sit here, it's about 20F outside with 30 mph winds...plans for lift served skiing went out the window last night with forecasted 75 mph gusts and limited lift operations at the VT areas where my seasons pass is good. Instead, I'll gamble that my favorite back country ski spot might have...

    Training?

I too am a BC skier, going on 20 years now...alpine skiing most of my life, And agreed, it's waaaay different than lift served skiing, quiet, peaceful, strenuous, challenging. You have to be very accurate in your assessment of your skills, equipment and the conditions. In the off season (off...

    Cutting Weight

I dehydrate all my food at home as well as my snacks. Snacks consist of dried bananas (bananas, not plantains, huge difference from commercial stuff), dried mango, dried apple, dried any fruit. Other snacks some home made trail mix. Lunches? I don't do lunch...

    Solitude / Wilderness

The last couple posts from yknpdlr and MichaelMerry reflect my opinions as well. I'm surprised it's taken 33 posts to recommend the Adirondacks. I've been visiting, paddling and camping in the ADK's for my entire lifetime...if it's solitude you seek, you'll find it. A great combination of water...
