Do Canoes Distract from Drug Side Effects?

If you check side effects on ChatGPD, you can get validation for ANYTHING you are experiencing. I’m currently struggling with tinnitus, likely from my days of elk guiding, with guns going off around me. Every drug I take can cause it according to ChatGPD. Are they worsening a problem, causing...

    What the Shell?

NRS Hydroskin has saved my bacon. I’ve been wearing the gloves pending hand surgery tomorrow. Sleep in the .5mm skins and use the 1.5mm for activities. Wore them today under my mittens while snowshoeing. Good stuff. My hands do sweat, but stay warm. Not sure what that means for paddling...

    What the Shell?

Reminds me of my old waxed canvas slicker, which lived rolled up on my cantle, and smelled like horse sweat and feet. It was basically too smelly to use and no amount of washing would get the smell out. I even tried getting it smoked up to mask the funk but only made things worse. It ended up...

    Landing Pads Installed

I’ve owned multiple t-posts over the years. Still might be one in the barn. Never cared much for them, especially with a hatchback. They work in certain circumstances, never ideally.

    What the Shell?

I don’t think any are really rain proof. I typically wear a sweater and a vest when active, and don’t want to be clammy. The other day I was out and the wet snow was annoying, my shell is ok with light rain, but lacks vents and the hood sucks. I always buy one size up, but they cut stuff trim...

    What the Shell?

What waterproof outer layer do you recommend? I’ve gone through several. My current one has an undersized hood, no hand pockets. I tried using it in a snowfall with a hat, and ended up with a sore neck. I’m not big on rain pants in the summer but my jacket must be solid.

    Water proofing gloves.

I just use waterproof gloves for cold protection. Neoprene fishing gloves for fishing. I lip most fish except pike and walleye, which I lift under the belly and grip behind the gills. I’m looking for a good lightweight short handle net. The ones I’ve tried were more trouble than they’re...

    New Gloves for Old Hands

I’ve been looking for support gloves for my achy breaky hands. After buying several crappy pairs, I found these 1.5mm NRS Guide Gloves. I bought a size down which help. They stretch out a little after a week of wear, but are comfortable and effective keeping me from hurting myself shoveling...

    What got you into canoeing?

Good way to meet girls. Hey, I was young. Turned out to be a good way to see animals. Alas, no girls😕. I guess a serious response is in order. Canoeing was not big where I grew up. Some friends took me along on a day-trip to a river in eastern Indiana and I was hooked. Bought my own...

Late Jan. 2026: Snow where you are?

8” here in the national toilet bowl of SW Ohio. Snowshoed around the neighborhood yesterday, but it’s very cold. Still tough to get the car out of the driveway. We buy 4 wheel drive cars not snow blowers. May need to reassess that philosophy.

Kayak paddle length for wider canoe

BB canoe-specific double blade paddles are good stuff, but the Werners are lighter weight, and the blade shape more of a cruising shape. The BB Orange SLICE has a CF shaft, but plastic blades. Mine held up fine, despite misgivings. I got it for occasional inadvertent rock bashing, lending...

    Kayoos

It occurs to thst since some canoes are designed to be paddled with “kayak” paddles, they must not be canoes at all, but something else. How can something designed for a kayak paddle be a real canoe? We need a new term - maybe a “kayoo”. Henceforth those designs with floor mounted seat...

Kayak paddle length for wider canoe

I’d like to see someone using an Impression in a kayak🤣. They’d be better off tying flippers to their elbows. Anyone who’s been solo on a remote windy lake in a loaded canoe will appreciate having that tool in their toolbox. In addition, many of today’s solo canoes are designed for double...

Kayak paddle length for wider canoe

They work well. I use a 30* cant. The impression is a tad weighty, but I didn’t care back then. Wife paddled a Prism through Woodland Caribou with one. She didn’t seem to mind. I was in an Encounter and feel like the blade width was useful in the big boat.

Kayak paddle length for wider canoe

Blades are also shaped different, but you mean like a sword and a knife? Like a limousine and a car. Like a musket and an AR15? Like a center and a guard? Like a dock and a pier? Like spaghetti and macaroni? Double blade canoe paddles have evolved over hundreds of years. They are distinctive.

Headlamps. Do you guys use 'em?

Two for me. Read with one in the tent if I have a paperback. I have Black Diamonds - served me well.

Kayak paddle length for wider canoe

First of all, a double canoe paddle is NOT a kayak paddle. Canoe paddles are longer. You’d be miserable using a 260-280cm paddle in most yaks. A big sit on top fishing yak might be the exception. Mostly, you could use a kayak paddle in a small canoe but not a double canoe paddle in a kayak...

    Need a Bigger Shaft

I was thinking of some handlebar tape. Securing the live end might be challenging.

    Need a Bigger Shaft

My trigger is my dominant (R) middle finger. Makes gripping anything painful. Opening jars is crazy hard. I figure if the shaft is wider, my fingers can deal better with the stress. Gonna try the cord wrap and see how that works. That’s if I can grip the cordage enough to get it tight...
