    Sparkleberry Swamp, November 2025

That's an 11 hour drive for me, but it's on my list. After being there, what is your opinion on navigating? Would you go alone?

A boat for its trip - poling boat advice

Good choice on the Tripper. I would think about adding a six foot beavertail paddle to your kit, if you haven't already.

    Removing The Stern Seat

I would encourage you to paddle from the stern seat. With a loaded boat you should be able to get a trim that'll work for you, while enjoying the most efficient paddling position in the boat.

The inside forward circle turn, henceforth known as the "straightius" turn

Thanks for confirming that it doesn't matter which way you lean to carve towards your paddle side, for this to work. My gut feeling though is that you can get more carve to offset yaw by leaning towards your paddle side, like Tom Foster and Charlie Wilson describe. I do it while my bow is...

The inside forward circle turn, henceforth known as the "straightius" turn

First off, I don't think it matters which way you lean to carve/pivot towards your paddle side. Either way, I think you can track just as straight of a course as hen using correction strokes alone, maybe even straighter. Although the canoe is carving a radius it is offset by the yaw of your...

Bench vs. Bucket Seats: Which Is Better On A Canoe?

I'm not familiar with the boat, but it might solo fine from the stern seat.

    Posting from your boat.

^^^ I would have needed a 96 inch paddle to do that from the stern seat.^^^

How much have you paddled this year?

The good news is I've been tripping for almost 35 years with a partially numb left foot. My sciatic pain used to go down the back of my left leg making it painful to sit. Then I had a skiing accident on Tincan Mt. and the symptoms changed to the numb foot. It was an upgrade for me. I hope you...

Bench vs. Bucket Seats: Which Is Better On A Canoe?

My Spirit II has bucket seats and I'm not a fan. First thing you can't comfortably paddle backwards from the bow seat. Second thing is I sometimes like to have my body right up against the gunnel to get my weight in the chine of the boat for a better carve. It also limits how much I can affect...

    BIRCHBARKS IN THE UK

It does look like it could be tippy, but since you will be kneeling I think you'll stay dry.

    Posting from your boat.

A lot of us paddle where we have cell phone coverage so it’s possible to post a picture in real time. Here is mine for today. Feel free to add more when you can.

Impact of Heeling - Canoe Design

I experimented with it last night. It definitely moved my bow towards my paddle side, but if I didn't hurry and plant my next stroke it seemed to want to turn back. I also was able to turn my boat while not moving forward by quickly repeating the "recovery" motion without putting the blade in...

    BIRCHBARKS IN THE UK

Great story Nick, and great luck. I'm glad you'll be getting it back on the water.

    Favo(u)rite Pastries While Wilderness Canoeing

I used to take Costco blueberry muffins. I would individually wrap and freeze them. They worked well for a quick breakfast with a coffee before fishing or a snack at night. I really liked the muffins but didn't eat them when not camping so they gave me one more reason to go.;)

Late Season Canoe Poling on the Union River

I was referring to your maple Maine guide paddle with the big blade, although on that shallow stream I probably would have stuck with the pole. When I went to catch my first Eddie with a pole I didn't know how I was going to do it and switched to the long paddle at the last second. The long...

Impact of Heeling - Canoe Design

It's pretty subtle Glenn. I've recently felt it in my 40 lb Seliga which turns very easily from the stern. I don't use it as a means of directional control though. If you're not paddling with tight abdominal muscles I don't think the force will make it from your arms to your butt. It will be...

Impact of Heeling - Canoe Design

I'm familiar with that reactive torque. You need to have tight abs or that torque won't make it to the boat. I don't rotate much so I thought it was from the momentum of swinging the paddle forward.

Late Season Canoe Poling on the Union River

Nice report and video, and a nice Tripper. That is a situation where I would have my Maine Guide Paddle. I think it pairs well with the pole. I don't know how Harry Rock feels about bringing a paddle along, but if you were tripping you would sure have one. The long paddle makes catching an eddie...

What leg to push off of. Effect of heeling on forward velocity.

I think you misunderstood me Steve. If I had a solo boat I would be in the dedicated seat. The boat already should be naturally stern heavy so it shouldn't be too hard to find one that'll do what I want it to. From a centralized seat you should be able to change trim from bow heavy to stern...
