    Wabakimi solo trip spring 2022

Part 6... Thursday, June 2, 2022, Day 8 When I got up at 6:00 a.m., I felt like I'd barely slept. I was quite tired, my muscles were stiff and cramped, and I was very thirsty. I hadn't drunk enough the day before. I decided against a fire since I didn't find suitable rocks to build a safe...

    Wabakimi solo trip spring 2022

Part 5... Tuesday, May 31, 2022, Day 6 Thunderstorms passed over the camp again during the night. When I got up, everything was wet. It took quite a while to get a fire going. For breakfast, I treated myself to plenty of coffee and one of Peter's homemade power bars. Wow! It tasted fantastic...

So what exactly is everyone up to in their non-boating hours?

Haha!!! The trees are further down. The trail is where you want to go;)...of course, one must exercise due caution...e.g. regarding the steepness of the slopes, avalanche danger, personal skills etc. If AT means alpine touring...yes, I have AT bindings and boots. I've been skiing for as long...

So what exactly is everyone up to in their non-boating hours?

Backcountry-skiing...walking up with skins on my skis, enjoying a nice view from the top of a mountain and having fun skiing down. Even though it is becoming increasingly popular, it is a good alternative to avoid the large crowds in the ski resorts.

Me too! What a great honor! I accept the DM award with great emotion, especially because it comes from someone who roams the woods north of Geraldton with a chainsaw, builds his own canoes, teaches kids, deals with forest management and also plays guitar. Thank you so much!

    Wabakimi solo trip spring 2022

The little mishaps are like the salt in the soup of a story :giggle: . I'm using a Nikon Coolpix AW120; the camera is water- and shockproof, it doesn't take high-quality photos but it's perfect for my sometimes clumsy hands. A high-quality camera with additional lenses and such wouldn't...

    Wabakimi solo trip spring 2022

Part 4... Sunday, May 29, 2022, Day 4 Despite a cold night, I slept very well. I woke up shortly before 6:00 a.m. The leftover firewood from the previous day, which had been stored dry under the tarp, proved useful. It looked like rain, so I only had a granola bar and coffee for breakfast. I...

    Wabakimi solo trip spring 2022

Part 3... To give you an overview of the route, here is a map of Wabakimi. The route is marked in pink. Unfortunately, due to copyright reasons, I'm not allowed to publish the detailed maps I used along the way. In my report I often mention the waters I paddled through by name; therefore...

    Wabakimi solo trip spring 2022

Part 2... Thursday, May 26, 2022, Day 1 After a rainy night, I got up early. Breakfast was ready at 7.00 a.m. My appetite was limited. After breakfast I loaded my two canoe packs and the barrel pack into Bruce's car. The canoe was heaved onto the roof of the car and lashed down. In the...

    Wabakimi solo trip spring 2022

It took me a while to even start writing this trip report... firstly, I don't like writing at all (I'd rather go paddling:giggle:!), and secondly, writing in English is much more difficult than in German, at least for me. Prologue Since my first canoe trip in Northern Ontario (1985 Albany...

At the risk of boring everyone here... First paddle of the year 2026:). Today it was even colder than yesterday, the ice was thicker and had spread out a bit. It took me more than thirty minutes and a lot of elbow grease to reach soft water. André

    Anyone Use This Type Shelter?

At Lake Savant, Northern Ontario, after a severe thunderstorm badly damaged our tent. We spent two nights in the Eureka VCS tarp/shelter until we could use our makeshift repaired tent again. In heavy rain coupled with strong winds, you inevitably get wet. André

The lake hasn't frozen over completely for decades; the last time this happened was in the winter of 1962/63 (I was just a toddler then). It's possible that in very cold winters, the shallower shoreline areas or the "shipping channels" freeze over, as shown in the picture above. This gives me...

It was foggy and cold this morning on the lake... No motorboats, no sailboats, no scullingboats, no other paddlers; I had the lake all to myself. André

    Wabakimi info

There is a stop in Armstrong, but no railway company employees are present. The employees travel on the train. I think they have some discretion in the matter. However, I wouldn't rely on them simply allowing a dog to travel. And even if they did, the animal would have to travel in the luggage...

What a brilliant assumption! I almost inhaled my afternoon coffee from laughing so hard. I'm not a meteorologist, but given the topography of the mountains, that could very well be the case.

I thought I'd share my impressions from today's paddling trip with you. On the drive down to the lake.... on the lake... At first I thought I was all alone, then I got company...

It's not a permanent structure. About two weeks ago someone made and used it as a makeshift shelter, it was covered with a tarp (tipi-style). Next time I stay overnight there, I will probably use the poles as firewood;)
