    Bent shaft angles

Doh! You are right, I was reading the wrong part of the scale! I guess I should have come here asking for advice on reading my angle finder! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Sedges! Thank goodness for the anonymity of the internet, I’m such a dolt! Side note - the new Ripplefx...

    Bent shaft angles

I recently picked up a Ripplefx paddle and put my angle finder on it and found it to measure about 7 degrees. I’ve noticed on some of my other bent shafts have the same measurements with the factor specs saying they are built 12 degrees as well. Would someone here be able to explain how these...

    Paull River information

I’ve done the Paul a number of times, the last was 9 years ago. It’s a great trip but it’s pretty popular and well travelled. There’s a sweet beach/bench campsite on Paul lake on it’s west side that’s actually the preferred drop off spot if your flying in. Archer doesn’t include it in her trip...

    Ally (Bergans) vs. Pakcanoes

Pak and Ally boats are not this, They’re painful to paddle on flat water. I love my pak boat but only pull it out as a last resort for the super remote stuff.

    Paddling in an Apocalypse

North Bay rocks. It’s pretty much the epicentre for canoeing in Ontario. Temagami, APP, the James Bay drainage rivers and so much more are a stone’s throw away. Lots of good escape routes for the doomsayers in the crowd. Lived there for 6 years, and would move back in a heartbeat.

    Getting Kids into Canoeing

There’s two seasons in my household, hockey and canoeing. My kids live for their yearly canoe trip. It’s a necessary escape from the city life, and they love the swimming and fishing under waterfalls, building forts, the rush of running whitewater, cooking and playing with the campfire, They...

World of Maps in Ottawa is great to deal with, great people and they ship all over.

Tired of restrictive headnets, try this

Hard to say, I’d imagine they were still there, they just didn’t bounce your face as much. Maybe they looked like a big set of ears, which is their favourite part of a moose. Always wanted a dragon fly tattoo on my shoulder as a deterrent for when I’m tarps off. Coolest insect ever besides the...

Tired of restrictive headnets, try this

Back in my tree planting days we did kind of the same thing except with a cattail head or some other weed by taping it to the hard hat. Worked well for the deer flys and horse flies not so much for the skeeters and black flies.

    Trip Recommendations in Northern Sask

No float plane really limits your options in Northern Saskatchewan, and makes it tough to get away from people. Sounds like you want some whitewater. Something on the Churchill corridor would probably work, like the Weaver River. It’s a short shuttle from Missinipe to where you start and you’d...

Looking back on 2024 and what’s ahead for 2025

2024 was pretty decent, took the family on the Bloodvien for 2 weeks in July and solo circumnavigated Lac La Ronge in September. Both trips were great, and both surpassed my expectations. 2025 will hopefully see the family heading to a mountain river in the Yukon and maybe a solo trip on...

Kayak vs Canoe - Your Personal Pros and Cons

I am a diehard canoer, but.. Kayaks have made heading deep into the woods possible for my family with 3 kids. We managed for a few years when they were super young to squeeze into our 18’6 MacKennzie and do some 2 week trips but eventually it was just too much and we bought our first kayak, a...

Fond Du Lac River, Saskatchewan (and rivers like it)

Pretty sure non residents of Canada need a permit to camp on crown lands, it’s like 10$ a night. The chance of running into anyone enforcing it up there though would be slim but you never know, there’s COs and RCMP stations in Stoney.

Fond Du Lac River, Saskatchewan (and rivers like it)

2 weeks on the FdL is basically the trip Archer describes in her book with a flight into the outlet out of Wollaston to where the river dumps into Black Lake. Another option is to do the Waterfound with a vehicle shuttle into Waterbury lake and then a plane pickup at Black Lake. You could also...

Fond Du Lac River, Saskatchewan (and rivers like it)

Funny enough, that’s not the case now. The best part of the entire trip from LaRonge to Stoney is from Points onward to Stoney. As soon as you turn off from Hidden Bay, the road widens considerably and its well maintained. They’ve put a lot of work into it. The worst section is from Southend to...

Fond Du Lac River, Saskatchewan (and rivers like it)

The Fond du Lac is an amazing river, one of my favourites. It’s a pretty easy river to access and now that the highway between Points North and Stoney Rapids is an easy 2 hour drive, the trip can be done without a bush plane if you’re up to some big lake travel. There’s lots of friendly locals...
