My quietest stroke is doing in water recoveries with either my Kettlewell modified otter or the ottertail I carved, which has an even longer blade. But I'm finding that I can be pretty quiet with my Zavs and my BB Viper, just by doing as @yknpdlr suggests.

I understand, but do these look stressed? With slow movements and blade in the water, I manage to get some pretty good photos without disturbing the subject. It's part of why I love canoes. Thumping the gunnel works against this. BTW, my departure is as careful as my approach. No ducks...

When I'm doing whitewater I'm usually using a fiberglass paddle and vinyl gunwales, so no sign of wear. I might be using the Grey Owl Hammerhead, but haven't had it long enough to accumulate wear. Oh.... never been a bowman in whitewater. Only solo.

My intent is to do like @yknpdlr , but I'm still a work in progress. If my paddle contacts the boat, it's by accident or the odd whitewater or wind fighting move. Oh - or it's to move directly sideways. My shoulders don't get sore unless I get sloppy trying to go fast or fighting wind.
