Looks like a poly boat to me, mine had similar scratches. Good price, I would buy it, probably gonna weigh in around 90 pounds, but fairly indestructible. Good canoe to lend to the relatives.

I wouldn't sink any money into that canoe, except for maybe roll a couple of coats of rustoleum on it to spruce it up. The cracks are inconsequential for you intended use, and if you start storing it out of the sun, it may well outlive you.

Hard to say based on those pics, with that colour it cold be either. I'm speculating that because it is so smooth, it could be epoxy. In any case, it is very minor, any type of paint will scrape off easily.

I'm wondering if you are planning on adding a brass stem strip, might be difficult with the edge you have on the stem. Difficult to tell from the pic, but I'm thinking your external stem might be riding a bit high. I usually follow the contour of the strips, rightly or wrongly...here's a pic...

For me, the biggest weight suck is the trim. Gunwales, thwarts, seats can often account for 1/3 of the weight if one is not careful.
